Things to do in Amiens
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Amiens
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months: gardens green, boats running, terraces out and battlefield fields at their most legible.
Warm and festival rich, but the gardens and the bay run at full pressure and the student city empties.
Réderie and Anzac Day month, with dawn commemorations at Villers-Bretonneux. Book everything early.
Second Réderie, autumn colour in the gardens and the start of the quiet season.
Christmas market from late November to 30 December turns the centre festive, with Chroma on the cathedral.
Worst months: cold, grey and short days, boats not running and Samara closed or on winter hours.

Where to stay in Amiens
Cathedral quarter / Centre-Ville
first trip, all-round base
Every main sight within 15 minutes on foot, with hotels at every tier and the market streets at the door.
Saint-Leu
evenings, atmosphere, younger travellers
Canalside terraces and student bars under the cathedral, but Thursday to Saturday nights are loud until late.
Henriville
quiet stays, longer visits, drivers
Calm 19th century streets near the Jules Verne house and botanical garden, with easier parking than the core.
Gare / Tour Perret
one-night rail stops and early trains
Practical chain hotels ten minutes from the cathedral, functional rather than atmospheric streets.
Think twice about
- Amiens-Nord
Northern housing estates with a long record of dealing and periodic violence, offering a visitor nothing. Do not base here.
- Étouvie
Western district French guides list as to avoid for higher petty crime, burglary, vandalism and noise nuisance.
- Gare-La Vallée station fringe
Scruffy and noisy with the least reassuring late night walk in the centre. Fine for a transit hotel, wrong for a weekend base.

Is Amiens safe?
- Central Amiens needs only ordinary care, with bags watched in market and Réderie crowds.
- Saint-Leu late at night means drunk student noise rather than danger, but expect it on weekends.
- Avoid basing in Amiens-Nord and Étouvie, and take normal big city station care after midnight.
- Emergency number anywhere in France is 112.
Amiens travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Restaurants facing the cathedral square charge for the view; better bistro value sits one square back.
- Among the Christmas market chalets, buy from Somme producer stalls and be selective about mass produced stock.
- Do not try the battlefields and the Baie de Somme in one day; they are opposite directions and each needs a full day.
- Avoid the Hortillonnages at midday on a July Saturday if any other slot exists.
Getting around Amiens: public transport and more
- Walk the centre: cathedral, Saint-Leu, museums and the gardens landing are all within 20 minutes of each other.
- Use Ametis buses for the zoo and outlying hotels, and Buscyclette bike rental for the Somme towpath.
- Direct trains from Paris Gare du Nord take about 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 20 and run roughly hourly.
- Hire a car only for battlefield and Baie de Somme days; the centre is easier without one.
