Things to do in Aix-en-Provence
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Aix-en-Provence
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring is the connoisseur season, markets, walking and terraces at their best, May and late April best overall.
Mid June to mid July is peak Aix, lavender, long light and the Festival d'Aix, also hot and booked out.
Weakest summer month, heat, some local restaurant closures and maximum crowding in Luberon and Cassis.
Second sweet spot, harvest, warm sea into late September and golden light, September arguably best of all.
Locals Aix, cold bright mistral days, Christmas markets and santons, cheapest hotels and shortest days.
What's on
- Festival d'Aix-en-Provence Early to late July each year
One of Europe great opera festivals, open air nights at the Archevêché.
- Aix en Juin through June

Vieil Aix
atmosphere and first timers
Medieval lanes, markets and the cathedral, livelier and noisier around the bar squares at night.

Lauves and Le Pigonnet garden ring
garden hotels for 3 plus nights

Countryside bastide ring
resort stay with a car
Superb pool and vineyard properties that visit Aix rather than base in it.
Think twice about
- Aix TGV station area and Arbois plateau
Station alone in scrubland near Vitrolles with car parks and no evening life. Sleep in Aix and commute to the train.
- Les Milles and La Duranne
Safe but soulless retail and office sprawl south and west. Fine for a motorway night, you drive for every coffee.
- Gare Routière and Avenue des Belges area
Least appealing streets after midnight near the transport nodes, with transient traffic and some rough sleeping. Pass through, do not base.
- Jas de Bouffan and Encagnane
Ordinary residential districts west, fine in themselves but few hotels, no evening scene and a bus ride from the Cours.
