Things to do in Nagpur
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Nagpur
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Winter is the season to come, with mild days, open tiger reserves and peak fresh mandarins across December and January.
A shoulder that turns fast, still workable in March, then highs past 40 degrees C compress sightseeing to dawn and evening.
Extreme heat, with May averages of 42 to 44 degrees C and peaks of 47 to 48, then monsoon onset in June. Safaris peak, people should not.
Monsoon, green and humid, with reserve core zones closed and only buffer safaris running at lower odds.
Post-monsoon warmth, parks reopening, Ambiya oranges arriving, and the huge 14 October gathering at Deekshabhoomi.
What's on

Best things to do in Nagpur
Deekshabhoomi

Futala Lake
The city's favourite evening lake, with a promenade, food stalls and fountain displays where Nagpur itself comes at sunset.
Ambazari Lake
Nagpur's largest lake, with a garden bank and island memorial, calmer and more local than Futala and best at sunset.
Maharajbagh Zoo
A small, shaded city zoo on the old Bhonsle garden in Sitabuldi, best for young children and closed on Mondays.

Where to stay in Nagpur
Ramdaspeth and Central Bazar Road
first trip, all-round base
Walkable to Deekshabhoomi and Maharajbagh, on the metro, with the mid-range and budget picks and several restaurants nearby.
Wardha Road and airport corridor
luxury and business stays
Home to both five star hotels and the airport, but every sight and meal needs a car or cab from here.
Sitabuldi and Sadar
short transit and station stays
The commercial centre around the fort, station and main shopping street, convenient for a night but busy and noisy.
Think twice about
- Nagpur Junction station perimeter
A loud, crowded transit zone with scruffy, broken pavements. Use it for trains, sleep in Ramdaspeth instead.
- Mahal and Itwari for overnight stays
Fascinating old city and wholesale market areas to walk in the morning, but congested and noisy at night with few decent hotels.
- MIHAN end of Wardha Road as a sightseeing base
A quiet, separate business zone far south of the centre. Fine for airport work, isolating without a car for sightseeing.

- In May, stay off the streets between about 10am and 5pm, sightsee at dawn and after dark, and drink water constantly.
- Satellite phones and standalone satellite GPS devices are illegal in India and carry severe penalties.
- Check the winter air quality index before a long morning walk, as fine-particle pollution is often high.
- Drink sealed bottled or hotel-filtered water and be selective with ice and raw salads at the smallest counters.
Nagpur travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Sitabuldi Fort opens only on 26 January, 1 May and 15 August, and foreign nationals are generally not admitted.
- Do not buy a bundled safari without seeing the official permit, which is named, gated and dated.
- Do not accept a Tadoba day trip without the gate, drive time and safari start time in writing.
- At Saoji houses, order a heat level below your usual, because the local medium is genuinely hot.
Getting around Nagpur: public transport and more
- Use the metro between Sitabuldi, Ramdaspeth, Wardha Road and the airport side of the city.
- Agree auto fares or insist on the meter before moving, or use app cabs and autos to skip the negotiation.
- For Ramtek, Dragon Palace, Pench and Tadoba, hire a car with a driver through your hotel and confirm the exact safari gate in writing.
