Things to do in Mysore
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Mysore
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months: post-monsoon green, days mid-to-high 20s°C, cool mornings for Chamundi steps, Kabini and Bandipur open and sighting well, Dasara at season's head; peak price and crowds deserved. Dasara runs ten days in late September or October, ending with the Jamboo Savari.
Hot, dry, safari specialist's window: afternoons 35 to 38°C in April, May, Kabini big-cat sightings peak as animals concentrate at water, hotels cheaper outside Dasara weekends. Ugadi (Kannada New Year) March, April. Chamundi steps dawn-only.
South-west monsoon: lush, quiet, discounted. Ranganathittu boating can suspend on KRS flood releases; safari sightings dip in thick green. Ashada Fridays June, July: avoid Chamundi Hill on those Fridays for huge pilgrim crowds or go for goddess. International Day of Yoga 21 June in Gokulam.

Where to stay in Mysore
Nazarbad / MG Road
First-time visitors and all-round base
Natural visitor quarter: palace short ride west, zoo next door, Chamundi Hill behind, wide roads, good hotels at every tier, easy autos and cabs.
JLB Road / Yadavagiri / Devaraja Mohalla
Heritage character and walking
Old hotel street with 1920s royal guesthouse, tree-lined roads, walkable to palace, Devaraja Market and station; more urban and lived-in than Nazarbad.
Gokulam / Vani Vilas Mohalla
Yoga, cafés and longer stays
Leafy residential quarter with shalas, healthy cafés, homestays; genuinely local pace but need auto/cab to palace sights.
Kuvempunagar / Saraswathipuram
Local residential value
University quarter with Nalpak restaurants and budget mid-range hotels; real Mysore life and fewer tourists, but longer ride to sights.
Chamundi foothills / Lalitha Mahal side
Resort splurge
Green quiet under the hill with palaces and resorts; choose when the hotel is the evening plan, accept cab for every sight.
Think twice about
- Mysuru Junction station and suburban bus-stand immediate frontage
Tout-and-traffic throat with diesel, honking from dawn, commission agents, and rows of rock-bottom lodges; functional for transit, poor as base when alternatives five minutes away at modest prices.
- Mandi Mohalla's market lanes as sleeping address
Lanes too narrow for cars, market noise and loading before dawn, parking nonexistent; visit hungry for Hanumanthu, don't sleep here.
- Far ring-road industrial outskirts (Hootagalli, Metagalli, highway strip)
Cheap pool resorts 8 to 10km out trade on low prices but pay back in cab time to every sight with nothing to walk to at night.
- Jamboo Savari procession route during Dasara
Palace to Sayyaji Rao Road to Bannimantap becomes viewing asset by day and road-closure trap by afternoon if not booked for the procession months ahead.

Is Mysore safe?
- Mysore is consistently regarded as one of India's calmer, safer-feeling mid-size cities including for women walking central and residential quarters in daylight and evening.
- Palace illumination crowds are family crowds.
- Real risks in order: scams and touting at station/bus-stand and silk shops; traffic at big circles; monkeys on Chamundi Hill (never carry visible food, hold bags); heat and steps; petty opportunism in Dasara crowds.
- Temple etiquette is safety-adjacent: dress modestly at Chamundeshwari and Srirangapatna, remove footwear where required, don't photograph inside sanctums or palace interior.
- Emergency number: 112.
Mysore travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Silk-and-sandalwood commission stop: buy at KSIC Mysore Silk outlet and Cauvery Arts & Crafts Emporium on Sayyaji Rao Road (closed Thursdays).
- Wrong Mylari / wrong Hanumanthu: Nazarbad for Original Vinayaka Mylari; Akbar Road, Mandi Mohalla for original Hanumanthu.
- Brindavan Gardens on Saturday night as only evening: weekday or not at all; never at cost of Sunday palace illumination.
- Lalitha Mahal as default luxury stay: visit and photograph it; Radisson or Metropole are stronger stays.
- Dasara-day improvisation: centre closes to vehicles, lakhs of crowds; pre-book viewing spot, train home and water bottle.
- Chamundi at noon in April: steps in midday heat are medical story; dawn or road only in summer.
Getting around Mysore: public transport and more
- Royal core (palace, market, Jaganmohan, station) is genuinely walkable in cool hours with wide pavements and shade trees.
- App cabs (Ola/Uber) work well; autos are plentiful, insist on meter or agree fare first.
- KSRTC city buses are cheap on Chamundi, zoo and Srirangapatna corridors.
- Hire car-and-driver for day-trips; agree day rate, stops and no shopping stops before departing.
- Bengaluru, Mysuru Expressway ~2.5 to 3 hrs (145km); Vande Bharat / Shatabdi trains ~2 to 2.5 hrs and are the civilised default, book ahead.
- Mysuru airport (MYQ, ~10km) has limited domestic flights; most international arrivals route via Bengaluru.
