Things to do in Murchison Falls National Park
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Murchison Falls National Park
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry and hot. Game concentrates near the river, Buligi is most productive, falls spray is manageable and fishing is at its best.
Long rains. Green and quiet with the best birding, but muddy tracks, wet chimp trails and higher malaria pressure.
Long dry season and the second peak. Prime game viewing and fishing, with September often the best balanced month.
Short rains. A shoulder season with migrant birds arriving, a productive delta and fewer vehicles, but more dispersed game.
Best things to do in Murchison Falls National Park
Murchison Falls
A three hour boat trip from Paraa to the base of the falls, past hippos, huge crocodiles and elephants on the banks.
Top of Murchison Falls
Stand beside the narrow gorge where the whole Nile drops, and hike up from the boat landing in about 45 minutes.
Uhuru Falls
The second cascade beside the main falls, often the clearer viewpoint when spray soaks the main gorge lookouts.
Buligi Peninsula
The main game drive circuit, palm savanna between the two Niles with giraffe, lion, elephant, buffalo and kob.
Victoria Nile Delta
A dawn boat cruise downstream to Lake Albert through papyrus delta, one of Africa's best places to see a shoebill.
Karuma Falls
Rapids and cascades on the Victoria Nile at Karuma bridge, a worthwhile stop on the eastern park route.
Heart of Murchison
The southern game circuit through woodland and savanna, a real dawn drive for south bank lodges without a crossing.
Where to stay in Murchison Falls National Park
North bank, Paraa and Buligi
dawn game drives and the delta
Sleeping north puts you on the Buligi tracks at first light with no river crossing before the game.
Pakwach and Tangi
value nights outside the northern gate
Lodges outside Tangi gate charge no park fee for the night and reach Buligi quickly each morning.
Karuma, east
eastern sector and northern circuit routes
The Karuma sector serves the eastern river and the Gulu road, but makes Paraa a long day's driving.
South bank, Mubako and Paraa south
boats, river lodges and every budget
The south bank holds the Paraa jetty, the Mubako river lodges and the park's only campsite style base.
Budongo and Masindi gateway
chimps and a night before or after the park
Budongo puts you at the chimp briefing point, and Masindi town breaks the Kampala drive with real beds and food.
Think twice about
- Kampala as a Murchison base
Kampala to Paraa is five to six hours each way. Day tripping spends the best game hours on a highway and wastes a 24 hour ticket.
- Masindi as a park base
Masindi is a good gateway night but about 85 km from Paraa, so basing there loses the dawn drives that justify the trip.

Is Murchison Falls National Park safe?
- Never swim in the Nile or Lake Albert, never walk a riverbank at night, and use the lodge escort after dark every time.
- This is a malarial lowland park with year round risk. Take prophylaxis advice, use nets and repellent, and test any later fever.
- Tsetse flies bite in the wooded south sector and below the falls. Wear neutral long sleeves and trousers there, not dark blue or black.
- Carry medical evacuation cover, because the nearest full hospital care is hours away in Kampala.
Murchison Falls National Park travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Do not sleep in Kampala or Masindi and day trip the park, and do not cross banks back and forth every day.
- Do not trust a single old web page for the Budongo chimp price, which varies widely between listings. Confirm it in writing.
- Do not skip the delta cruise for a second falls cruise. They are different trips in opposite directions.
Getting around Murchison Falls National Park: public transport and more
- Drive Kampala to Masindi on tarmac in four to five hours, then through Budongo to Paraa in about another two hours.
- Break the Kampala drive at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary near the halfway point for rhino tracking and lunch.
- A paved highway runs through the park via Paraa to Pakwach. Drive it slowly and expect game on the road, especially after dark.
- Confirm the current Paraa bridge crossing arrangement with UWA or your lodge a few days before travel, as arrangements have changed repeatedly.
