Green-breasted pitta breeding and calling season, the window specialist birders should target at Kanyanchu.
Short dry season and second peak, with Christmas and New Year the hardest weeks and good migrant birding at Bigodi.
Long rains, lushest forest, lower prices and easier permits, with muddy slippery trails and discounted April and May permits in 2026.
Short rains shoulder, fewer visitors and lower prices, with November carrying the 2026 low season permit discount.

Think twice about
- Kampala and Entebbe as a trek morning base
Five to six hours by road each way. A day trip is a road trip with a permit attached and no buffer.
- Fort Portal town for a habituation dawn start
About an hour on a dark road before a nest start that does not wait. Sleep at the forest edge for CHEX.
- Congolese border provinces
The Congolese provinces bordering Uganda carry serious security risk. Do not add a Congo side trip from western Uganda.

Is Kibale safe?
- Malaria is present all year across Uganda, including Kibale. Take prophylaxis advice and use nets and repellent from dusk.
- Do not trek sick, keep the distance rangers set, at least 8 metres, use no flash and eat nothing near the chimps.
- Use a registered operator, travel with UWA rangers in the park, and follow local security guidance on the ground.
- Travel western roads by day with an experienced driver, and swim in crater lakes only where your guide advises.
Kibale travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Sleeping in Fort Portal to save money works badly for a habituation dawn start, once the early transfer is priced in.
- Skipping Bigodi to save its small fee is the most common false economy in Kibale.
- No operator can guarantee a sighting, a short trek or particular chimp behaviour.
Getting around Kibale: public transport and more
- Drive Kampala to Kanyanchu in about five to six hours via Mubende and Fort Portal, or approach from Queen Elizabeth in about two hours.
- Fly to Kasese airstrip and transfer by road for roughly two hours, arranged through your lodge or operator.
