Is Lake Bunyonyi safe?
- Swim only at a lodge jetty, in daylight, never alone or at night; the lake is deep and cold with no lifeguards.
- Wear a life jacket on every boat and canoe trip, travel the water in the morning, and never improvise a night boat.
- Altitude keeps malaria low at the lake, not absent; take prescribed prophylaxis for Uganda and use a net.
Lake Bunyonyi travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The claimed 900 metre depth is contested; published figures run from about 44 metres to 900 metres.
- A swimming promise without the word deep in it, and any Sharp's Island tour that muddles Bwama and Njuyeera.
- An itinerary with no free morning misses the mist, the birdsong and the point of the lake.
Getting around Lake Bunyonyi: public transport and more
- Kabale is seven to eight hours by road from Kampala, then 8 km and 20 to 30 minutes to the Rutinda landing.
- Island lodges run their own boat transfers, and the transfer arrangement is part of the booking.
- From Kigali allow three to four hours including the Katuna border, and from Bwindi two to three hours to the nearer sectors.
