Best time to visit Kampala
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Long dry season: hottest and brightest, best for rafting, Ssese ferries, golf and safaris, at peak prices.
Long rains: heaviest in April, flooding downtown and muddy excursions, but greenest, cheapest and emptiest.
Short dry season: cooler with most sunshine, the classic window for gorilla treks, safaris and rafting. Book everything.
Short rains: lighter sporadic showers, green and warm, with a festival rich calendar.

Where to stay in Kampala
Kololo
best overall base
Diplomatic, leafy and secure hill above downtown, near Acacia Mall, Kisementi restaurants and the Golf Club.
Nakasero
first timers and business
Central hill above the CBD, walkable to the Independence Monument and markets by day, safe and patrolled.
Bugolobi
longer stays and local feel
Creative middle class neighbourhood with Village Mall, cafes and serviced apartments at lower prices than Kololo.
Naguru
business and quiet nights
The next hill east of Kololo, quieter, with rooftop views and good business hotels.
Munyonyo / Makindye
resort weekends and lake stays
Lakeside resorts and lake views, but a traffic hostage commute into the centre.
Think twice about
- Downtown CBD valley, Old Taxi Park, Kampala Road low blocks, Katwe and around Owino Market
Flood prone, gridlocked commercial pit with open drains, dense crowds, phone and bag snatching and no quiet after dark. Visit by day on a guided walk, sleep on a hill.
- Kisenyi and Mengo low areas
Same congestion and flooding profile near the taxi parks. Do not base here.
- Isolated plots in Kabalagala and Kansanga
Lively bar strip but late night noise and petty crime around closing time, and lone walking after dark is unwise, if nightlife is not your purpose.

Is Kampala safe?
- Petty theft is the main risk: keep phones and valuables invisible, windows up in jams, and carry a copy of your passport.
- Do not walk alone after dark. Move by vetted car or SafeBoda app and keep drinks in sight in nightlife areas.
- Yellow fever certificate is required for entry. Malaria is present, so follow clinician advice, use repellent at dusk and drink bottled or filtered water.
- Uganda's Anti-Homosexuality Act imposes severe penalties. LGBTQ visitors face serious legal exposure and should seek current legal advice before travel.
Kampala travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Uganda Museum as a standalone half day. Give it an hour inside a guided day.
- The Equator as a full day paid tour. It is a photo stop, half a day at most with Mpanga Forest.
- Downtown central budget hotels on Kampala Road. Cheap because you pay in sleep and stress.
- Changing money with street changers and swimming in Lake Victoria off beaches, where bilharzia and currents are real.
Getting around Kampala: public transport and more
- Traffic rules everything: build big buffers, cluster sights by hill, and never schedule a transfer tight after a cross town trip.
- Use a trusted private driver for the whole stay, plus Uber, Bolt and SafeBoda from ride apps. Confirm pickups by phone.
- Entebbe airport is 40km away: always take the Entebbe Expressway toll road and pre book your arrival transfer.
- Bodas are the top injury risk. If you ride, use only SafeBoda via the app, daytime, one passenger, bag held in front.
