Best time to visit Mbarara
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Long dry season, the best window for Lake Mburo, with firm tracks and wildlife near water.
Short dry season, the second best window, hot and dry and busy on the western road around Christmas.
Long rains, the wettest months, with muddy gate approaches and walking trails but green country and softer rates.
Short rains, with common afternoon rain and the usual flood and landslide cautions on regional roads.
A shoulder month between seasons, workable for the park with waterproofs packed.

- Dial 999 for police, 911 for ambulance and 112 for fire in Uganda.
Mbarara travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Anyone selling a four-day Mbarara town itinerary or luxury fine dining in town is padding, as the town honestly needs one to two nights.
- Do not expect resident lions or elephants at Lake Mburo, and do not pay big-five prices for it.
- Specific dishes in Mbarara change with supply, so treat menu recommendations as indicative.
Getting around Mbarara: public transport and more
- Mbarara is about 4 hours by road from Kampala, and the Lake Mburo gates are roughly 30 to 45 minutes from town.
- Use a lodge vehicle or a reputable hired car and driver for the park, and agree any taxi or boda fare before setting off.
- Matatus and boda-bodas carry real safety risks, so keep any boda hop short, in daylight and with a helmet.
