Things to do in Mbale
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Mbale
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
First dry season and the best all round window, with the clearest Wagagai and Wanale views and the driest trails.
Long rains: falls at their most dramatic, trails muddy, and landslide risk on Elgon slopes in heavy rain.
Second dry season and the other prime hiking window; in even years August brings the Imbalu launch at Mutoto.
Coffee harvest on the Elgon slopes, the richest season for the Sipi farm to cup coffee tour.
Short rains: greener hills and fewer visitors, with mud returning and road transfers needing slack.

Think twice about
- Karamoja sub-region, northeast of Mbale
There is an increased security presence and cattle related raids in Karamoja; use caution and do not go there at night. It is a separate expedition, not a Mbale day trip.
- Steep Elgon slopes around Bududa in heavy rain
There is landslide risk near Mount Elgon in heavy rain, particularly in Bulucheke sub-county, Bududa District. Do not hike exposed slopes in storm weather.
- Mbale town centre streets late at night
The centre empties after dark and boda stages and taxi parks get rougher. Use your hotel's known riders or contacts at night instead of walking.
