What's on

Where to stay in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and the Gorilla Highlands
Buhoma
first trek, gentlest treks and widest lodge choice
Northern sector at the lowest altitude, with the park headquarters, all tiers of lodges and Queen Elizabeth links.
Ruhija
birding, quiet and high forest
Eastern and highest sector, fewer lodges, superb endemic birding on the Mubwindi Swamp Trail.
Rushaga
permit availability and habituation
Southern sector with the most gorilla families and the only habituation experience, on steep ground.
Nkuringo
fit trekkers and the best views
Southwestern ridge sector with the hardest treks in Bwindi and views over the forest to the volcanoes.
Mgahinga, Kisoro and Lake Mutanda
Mgahinga gorillas, golden monkeys and volcano hikes
Southern base towns and lake shore for the Nyakagezi family, golden monkeys and three volcano climbs.
Lake Bunyonyi
post trek recovery, swimming and canoeing
Island lake near Kabale for a rest day after the forest, never as a base on trek morning.
Think twice about
- The wrong sector for your permit
Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo are hours apart by rough road. Sleep in the sector named on your permit.
- Kabale as a trek morning base
Kabale is hours from every trailhead on mountain roads. Stay there for Bunyonyi, not for a briefing point.
- Congolese border provinces and Virunga tours
The Congolese provinces bordering Uganda, including Virunga National Park, are not a safe side trip from Kisoro.
- Bunagana border area, Kisoro District
Crossings on the Congolese side are controlled by the M23 group and can close at short notice. Keep the situation under review.

- From Kigali the southern sectors are about four to five hours by road including the border crossing.
