Things to do in Munnar
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Munnar
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Winter peak: clearest views, coldest dawns, best trekking and Kolukkumalai sunrises, worst prices and crowds at Christmas and New Year. Late January to February weekdays are the connoisseur window, but check the Eravikulam calving closure.
Post monsoon: green at its most saturated, waterfalls still full, mist dramatic and crowds thinner than winter. In a Neelakurinji year September to October is the bloom window.
Summer at 15 to 25C: pleasant for tea and early walks, haze softens views and domestic crowds surge in April to May school holidays. Eravikulam may be closed early in this period.
Southwest monsoon June to early September: worst for a first visit, with heavy rain, trek closures, leeches and landslip risk, but the lowest prices and waterfalls at full roar.
What's on
- Neelakurinji bloom September to October in bloom years; the next mass bloom is expected in 2030
Once in 12 years mass bloom, last in 2018 and next expected around 2030, at Eravikulam and other high sites; early morning is best.
- Onam Aug/Sep, 10 days, main day Thiruvonam
Kerala's biggest festival: flower carpets and sadya feasts; in Munnar expect festive hotel meals and fuller buses.
- Christmas and New Year week late December
Not a festival tip but a warning: peak pricing and traffic, book everything or avoid.

Where to stay in Munnar
Chithirapuram - Pallivasal - Pothamedu corridor
best overall base, first trip
Best resorts look over tea valleys and Attukad falls, on the Kochi side approach, 15 to 25 minutes from town.
Chinnakanal - Suryanelli
Kolukkumalai and Top Station side, split stay
High tea and lakes with a 4 to 5am Kolukkumalai start instead of 3am, but an hour back to town sights.
Munnar town, MG Road and Old Munnar
budget, transport and eating out
Walk to restaurants, bus stand and jeep stands at a third of resort prices, with no view to speak of.
Devikulam and Tea County hill above town
families and older travellers wanting quiet near town
Green and quiet 5 to 10 minutes above the centre with government run reliability.
Think twice about
- Central Munnar town around the bus stand and MG Road market junction
Congested, noisy and gridlocked with no green outlook. Fine on a budget, a poor base at mid range resort prices.
- Isolated unreviewed resorts far down a single track estate road beyond Chinnakanal or Devikulam
No walkable food, no passing tuk tuks and patchy signal, so you can be stranded without a confirmed driver.

Is Munnar safe?
- Main risks are hairpin roads in mist and rain, landslip closures in heavy monsoon, slippery waterfall rock and monsoon leeches.
- Drink bottled or filtered water and keep distance from tahr, elephants and gaur; the forest guide's word is final.
- Nearest full hospital care is back toward Adimali and Kochi, so insurance and a basic medical kit matter.
Munnar travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Photo Point and Echo Point as destinations, and Rose Garden and Hydel Park as headline sights.
- Mattupetty Dam at noon on a Sunday, elephant ride parks, and the Tea Museum instead of a working factory.
- Any Munnar in one day package stringing nine stops at 15 minutes each, and tea bought at the first bazaar stall.
Getting around Munnar: public transport and more
- Hire a car and driver by the day through your hotel or a named local operator and agree route, start and price before setting off.
- Tuk tuks are fine for town hops; jeeps are for Kolukkumalai and rough estate tracks only.
- Cochin International is 105 to 110 km and 3.5 to 4 hours by road; never cut a same day connection tight.
- Carry small rupee notes: forest fees, jeeps, stalls and small meals rooms are cash first. BSNL has the best high range signal.
