Things to do in Manali
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Manali
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring, apple blossom, roads clear, rafting and paragliding open, Rohtang typically opens late May.
Peak season, prices and traffic, Rohtang most accessible and Hampta and Bhrigu treks opening.
Monsoon, valley greenest but landslide risk, rafting closures, leeches and unpredictable Rohtang access.
Best overall from mid September, post monsoon clarity, harvest, best treks and rafting resumes.
Autumn, crowds gone and prices softening, nights cold by late October and Rohtang closes with heavy snow.
Winter snow most reliable late December to February, Solang skiing and Sethan igloos, Rohtang closed.

Old Manali

Larger resorts with parking, gardens and river access, trading walkability for space and calm.
Mall Road / Model Town
one night transit stops
Maximum convenience with maximum noise, crowds and pricing, fine for one night and not for a week.
Vashisht & Naggar
repeat and long stay travellers, art and heritage travellers
Village mornings in Vashisht and heritage touring from Naggar suit slower trips across the Kullu valley.
Think twice about
- Mall Road itself in peak season
Pedestrian crowds until late, horns and taxi queues from early, highest rates for least space and view, and worst car traffic. Congestion and value, not safety.
- Rohtang Road / Aleo New Manali hotel strip on the highway
Day trip traffic from 4am passes your door and diesel queues form at checkpoints, too far to walk to Old Manali cafes yet not in nature.
