Things to do in Lucknow
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Lucknow
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best season. Cool clear days for monument walking, food crawls, Dudhwa and Nawabganj, with fog delays possible in late December and January.
Hardest season. Heat builds to 40 to 45C, so sightsee early and late. Mango season peaks in June as the delicious exception.
Monsoon. Lush and humid with waterlogged old city lanes, and Dudhwa shut. Best for a slow food and museum stay.

Where to stay in Lucknow

first trip, all-round base
Central and walkable in the evening, on the Metro, and surrounded by restaurants and chikan showrooms.

luxury, business and parks
The modern east bank luxury cluster, with the big parks and riverfront on your doorstep.
Mall Avenue / Cantt edge and Aliganj / Mahanagar
longer stays and quiet
Leafy residential districts with guesthouses and serviced apartments, less glamorous and more liveable.
Think twice about
- Charbagh railway station area
Noisy around the clock, dense with touts and transient hotels of uneven hygiene. Stay in Hazratganj and taxi in for trains.
- Aminabad / Chowk / Husainabad core, Old City
Extremely congested lanes with near impossible evening vehicle movement, thin basic lodging and painful late night car access. Visit by day on foot.
- Alambagh / airport highway strip and far Sushant Golf City fringes
Sprawling and car dependent, far from both the old city and Hazratganj life, except for a transit night or a golf resort stay.

Is Lucknow safe?
- Traffic is the real risk. Look both ways even on one ways, as rickshaws and two wheelers improvise.
- Eat street food hot at high turnover stalls and drink bottled or filtered water.
- Hazratganj and Gomti Nagar feel comfortable in the evening. Do the densest Chowk lanes by day, with a guide on a first visit.
- Use app cabs after dark and keep valuables zipped in market crowds.
Lucknow travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Monument gate guides who sprint the Bhool Bhulaiya in fifteen minutes.
- Cheap machine made chikan sold as hand work. Learn the real texture at Ada in Hazratganj first.
- Trying to do Dudhwa as a day trip. It is an overnight expedition, not a drive.
- Hotel buffets as your only Awadhi exposure, and airport or mall takeaway versions of the famous originals.
Getting around Lucknow: public transport and more
- Use Ola, Uber and auto rickshaws as the default, and agree the app price rather than negotiating on old city streets.
- The Metro North South line is excellent for Hazratganj, Charbagh, the airport and Gomti side hops.
- Hire a car with driver by the day for Ayodhya, Nawabganj and a full Imambara to Gomti Nagar day.
- Do not self drive in the old city. Congestion, one ways and scarce parking will eat the trip.
