Things to do in Leh
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Leh
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Peak summer: all circuits open, lakes bluest, treks and rafting full. September has clearer skies and thinner crowds.
Shoulder: blossom in May, golden poplars in autumn, but passes and remote stays are uncertain or closing.
Winter: lakes freeze and highways close, but snow leopard, Chadar and winter festivals reward specialists.

- Directly on Main Bazaar / Fort Road's loudest block
Noisy from 6 am with persistent tout pressure, poor for acclimatising or travelling with children. Sleep one lane back.
- Winter-unproven properties in winter
Properties booked from summer photos may lack central heating, unfrozen hot water and winter staffing. Confirm in writing.
