Things to do in Kausani
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Kausani
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months: post monsoon air is cleanest, Himalayan clarity is sharpest, and everything is open.
Pleasant spring and early summer, buransh blooms in March and April, and the main trekking window is open.
Clearest skies and occasional snow, with nights falling toward 2 degrees Celsius. Pack serious warm layers.
Monsoon: clouded views, landslide prone roads, leeches and the planetarium shut. September can flip to superb late.
What's on
- Uttarayani Mela Around 14 January, about a week
Kumaon's greatest fair at the Saryu and Gomti confluence in Bageshwar, with ritual bathing and folk performance.
- Maha Shivratri February or March, lunar date varies; check dates
The great Shiva night at the Baijnath and Bagnath temples, when both are at their most alive.
- Nanda Ashtami and Bhramari Devi Fair August
The annual fair at the hilltop Bhramari Devi temple near Kausani, drawing visitors from the surrounding valleys.
- Gandhi Jayanti at Anasakti Ashram 2 October
A modest day of prayers and remembrance at the ashram, at the start of the best viewing season.
Best things to do in Kausani
Kausani View Point
The ridge viewpoint for the full Himalayan arc, where Trishul and Nanda Devi turn gold at sunrise on a clear morning.
Anasakti Ashram

Sumitranandan Pant Gallery

Where to stay in Kausani
Main ridge - Anasakti Ashram and View Point road
first trip and sunrise without a vehicle
Hotels face the panorama directly and the ashram, viewpoint, observatories and market are all walkable.
Baijnath Road and Tea Estate side
quiet garden stays with a car and driver
Larger resorts sit in their own gardens above the valley, with the tea estate close and Baijnath a short drive.
Market and bus stand area
cheapest transit nights
Shops, dhabas, taxis and buses at the door, but the least scenic rooms in a village visited for scenery.
Think twice about
- Garur and Bageshwar valley floor as a Kausani base
Hotter, busier and with no panorama, it means a daily uphill commute to everything you came to Kausani for. Not unsafe, just self defeating.
- Market and bus stand strip for a view trip
Noise and wall facing rooms save little money while removing the dawn Himalayan view that is the whole destination.

- Confirm observatory shows on the day, because cloud cancels them, and order Kumaoni thalis a day ahead.
- Give the panorama at least three nights, because two cloudy nights is the standard Kausani regret.
Is Kausani safe?
- Carry a torch after dark, as lanes and steep hotel approach paths are unlit.
- Keep food from monkeys on terraces, and expect leeches and slippery paths on forest trails in the monsoon.
- Village medical care is basic, so bring personal medication and travel in daylight with an experienced hill driver.
- Winter nights can fall toward 2 degrees Celsius, with occasional snow from December to February.
Kausani travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- A one night package stop gives you a coin flip on the view that is the entire destination.
- Monsoon trips from July to September usually hide the Himalaya behind cloud for days at a stretch.
- The tea estate is a pleasant small hour, not a Darjeeling scale plantation, and Rudradhari Falls shrink in dry months.
- Pure pashmina at stall prices is not pure pashmina, and observatory shop upsells are a documented complaint.
Getting around Kausani: public transport and more
- Walk the ridge: viewpoint, ashram, observatories and market are minutes to about a kilometre apart.
- Keep the taxi or car and driver you arrived with and agree day rates for Baijnath, Bageshwar and Ranikhet.
- Nearest railhead is Kathgodam, roughly 130 to 140 km and 4.5 to 5.5 hours by mountain road.
- Budget Kumaon journeys by hours, not kilometres, and add a buffer after rain when roads can close.
