Things to do in Kanyakumari
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Kanyakumari
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Coolest and clearest months, calmest ferry seas, best sunrise and sunset chances, and the highest crowds and prices.
Hot and humid, sightseeing at dawn and dusk only, with the temple car festival in May to June.
Southwest monsoon: heavy rain, rough seas, likely ferry suspensions and Thirparappu at its fullest.
Northeast monsoon rain mixes with Navratri and the October Cape Festival, and sea sunsets return from mid October.
What's on
- Navratri at Kumari Amman Temple September to October, nine nights
The temple's nine night festival in district listings, with the town at its most devotional and crowded.
- Cape Festival October, three days
A three day cultural festival in Kanyakumari in festival listings, with programmes across the town.
- Kumari Amman Temple car festival May to June
The temple car festival in district listings, falling in the hot season before the southwest monsoon.
- Chaitra Purnima full moon at the Sangam Full moon day in April or May
The full moon most prized locally for sunset and moonrise falling close together over the two horizons.
Best things to do in Kanyakumari
Vivekananda Rock Memorial
The offshore memorial reached only by state ferry, with a meditation hall and views back to land's end.
Thiruvalluvar Statue
The 133 foot poet statue, now reached on foot from the Rock Memorial over the glass bridge opened in 2024.
Kanyakumari Bhagavathy Amman Temple
The shore temple to the virgin goddess who names the town, at its best at the dawn opening.
Gandhi Memorial Mandapam
The free memorial where Gandhi's ashes were kept, built so birthday sunlight falls on the urn spot.
Triveni Sangam
The confluence of three seas with a pilgrim ghat, the town's sunrise ground and a sea you watch, not swim.
Where to stay in Kanyakumari
East Car Street and the temple core
first trip, sunrise and the ferry
Sea facing rooms look at the rocks, and the temple, Sangam and jetty are all a short walk at dawn.
Beach Road, western shore
sunset side, calmer grounds and families
Resort grounds and pools a short walk from the centre, facing the sunset side of the confluence.
Chittar Lake, outside town
retreat splurge with Kanyakumari as a day trip
Lakeside villas in plantation country, about 90 minutes by road, wrong for dawn at the Sangam.
Think twice about
- Nagercoil as a sightseeing base
It has the wider train choice but sits about 20 km inland, so basing there turns every sunrise, temple opening and first ferry into a pre dawn road trip. Sleep in Kanyakumari town and use Nagercoil only for trains.
- The rocky Sangam shore for swimming
Rough confluence water, strong currents and wave washed rocks make this a shore to watch, not to swim from. Use Thirparappu Waterfalls or a hotel pool for water.

Vattakottai Fort
A small granite seaside Travancore fort running into the sea, calm, windy and almost crowd free.
Thirparappu Waterfalls
A 50 foot river waterfall with designated bathing areas, the district's real place to get into water.
Kanyakumari Sunset Point
The free western shore viewpoint where the town gathers to watch the sun drop into the Arabian Sea.

Is Kanyakumari expensive? What a day costs
| Budget | ₹1,800 a person |
|---|---|
| Classic | ₹3,500 a person |
| Splurge | ₹7,000 a person |
A day of food, drink, sights and getting around, before the room
What to book ahead
- Anantya by the Lake: weeks ahead
- Book sea facing rooms for winter weekends, the Christmas to New Year peak and festival dates.
- Book an Anantya by the Lake villa ahead in season if the lakeside splurge is part of the trip.
- A special or online ferry ticket shortens only part of the queue, so arrive at the jetty early regardless.
Is Kanyakumari safe?
- Stay vigilant in crowds: violent crime happens at tourist sites, and attacks on tourist locations, transport hubs and markets can happen with little or no warning.
- The sea at Kanyakumari is not swimmable: rough, rocky and with strong confluence currents at the Sangam.
- Ferries to the Rock Memorial are cancelled in rough seas, most often in the two monsoon seasons.
- The district catches both the southwest and northeast monsoons, and heat is severe from March to June.
- The all India emergency number is 112.
Kanyakumari travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Treating the sea at the Sangam as swimmable, when the rocky shore and confluence currents make it dangerous.
- Arriving at Padmanabhapuram Palace on a Monday or in its lunch closure and losing the day trip.
- Accepting an unofficial guide at Suchindram without agreeing the price before the tour starts.
- Trying to do the ferry, the palace and Thirparappu Waterfalls in a single day.
Getting around Kanyakumari: public transport and more
- Walk the centre: temple, Sangam, Gandhi Mandapam and the ferry jetty sit within a short walk of East Car Street.
- Use Kanniyakumari station for direct trains and Nagercoil Junction, about 20 km away, for the wider choice.
- Hire a car for a combined Suchindram and Padmanabhapuram day, and for Thirparappu Waterfalls.
