Things to do in Jaipur
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Jaipur
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Winter, plainly the best months: 22 to 28C days, golf, polo, ballooning and wildlife all running.
Spring shoulder: March warms fast but mornings stay kind, prices soften, Holi and Gangaur fall here.
Summer to avoid for a first trip. May and June are the worst months, with heat that is a genuine health risk.
Monsoon: short violent downpours, humidity, low crowds and prices. Teej falls here and September is the value pick.
Festival autumn: temperatures fall, parks reopen, Dussehra and Diwali light the walled city.

- Teej July-August
Swings, henna and a royal procession over two evenings, and peak ghewar season at LMB and Rawat.

Royal processions and effigy burning as festival autumn opens.
- Diwali October / November
The bazaars compete in a municipal lighting competition and the walled city is outlined in illuminations for five nights.

The Camel Fair turns day-trip Pushkar into one of India's great spectacles.
Worth the trip for
Best things to do in Jaipur
Amber Fort
Jaipur's great Rajput fort-palace above Maota Lake, with the Sheesh Mahal mirror hall. Go at opening and walk up.
City Palace
A still lived-in royal palace with textiles, armoury and the famous four season doors. The royal tour is the splurge.
Jantar Mantar
Giant 1730s masonry astronomy instruments, including the world's largest stone sundial. A guide makes it click.
Hawa Mahal
The pink honeycomb facade is the experience, best seen from the rooftop cafes opposite in morning light.
Albert Hall Museum
Rajasthan's state museum and best craft survey, then see the Indo-Saracenic building floodlit at night.
Nahargarh Fort
The city's balcony: ramparts looking down the Pink City grid as the lights come on at sunset.

A working pilgrimage gorge of springs, tiered kunds and macaques, best in late afternoon shade.

Where to stay in Jaipur
C-Scheme
first trip, all-round base
Garden suburb with the city's best cafes and restaurants, 10 to 15 minutes from the Pink City gates.
Civil Lines / Ajmer Road
quiet, green calm
Leafy, low-density streets around official bungalows, with the same easy old-city access as C-Scheme.
Bani Park / Hathroi Fort
value and boutique havelis
A pleasant residential district of family-run heritage hotels, minutes from the station and Pink City.
M.I. Road
being in the middle of everything
Big hotels and famous restaurants at your feet, at a price in noise. Choose a set-back property or high floor.
Inside the walled Pink City
a deliberate haveli night
Bazaars at the door and the full sensory load at all hours. Book a destination haveli as an experience, not a base.
Goner Road
a resort trip where the resort is the point
East of the city, the Oberoi's gardens are a deliberate drive from sightseeing, chosen on those terms.
Think twice about
- Sindhi Camp / Jaipur Junction station surrounds
Jaipur's tout and commission epicentre, with station-exit hotel scams, bus crush and nowhere pleasant to walk at night.
- The walled city's bazaar lanes
Budget rooms off Johari and Tripolia bring pre-dawn noise, no vehicle access, and deserted, badly lit wholesale streets at night.
- Sanganer / airport and Tonk Road strip
A motel row with nothing to walk to, every day starting on a highway, and lobby tour desks that are commission operations.
- Amer / Kukas resort strip
Wedding and conference resorts that charge a 30 to 45 minute traffic tax on every outing, with nothing to walk to.

Curious Life Coffee Roasters
The specialty-coffee standard in C-Scheme for a proper espresso break.

Is Jaipur safe?
- Check your government's current travel advice before you go.
- Scams, not street crime, are the risk: gem scripts, station scripts and unmetered auto overcharging. Use app cabs and prepaid counters.
- Women travellers: bases C-Scheme, M.I. Road and Bani Park are the named picks. Dress modestly, use app cabs after dark and share the trip.
- Monkeys at Galta Ji take visible food and loose items. Never feed them, hold bags tight.
- Drink sealed or filtered water, eat busy and cooked hot, and carry ORS in the desert heat.
- Emergency number is 112. Tourist police help points sit at Jaipur Junction and major monuments.
Jaipur travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The gem-export scam is Jaipur's signature con. Never buy gems as an investment and never carry or post anything for anyone.
- Do not take elephant rides at Amber. Walk or jeep up in 10 minutes instead.
- Any driver detour to a textile factory, gem workshop or government emporium is a commission stop. Say no shopping today.
- Hawa Mahal's interior does not match its facade. The cafe opposite is the experience.
- Chokhi Dhani is a well-run Rajasthani theme park, not an authentic village dinner. Go only on those terms.
- Jal Mahal cannot be entered and has no legitimate tickets or boats. Anyone selling entry is inventing it.
- Hire guides at official counters or through your hotel. Attaching gate guides are often shop runners.
Getting around Jaipur: public transport and more
- App cabs Uber and Ola are the default, with a hired car and driver for the Amer day and day trips. Agree price, stops and no shopping stops first.
- E-rickshaws and autos in the old city: agree the fare first or insist on the meter, and walk the bazaar streets themselves.
- The Metro Pink Line runs Mansarovar to Badi Chaupar and suits the station, M.I. Road and old-city axis, not Amer or C-Scheme.
- Jaipur International Airport is about 11km south, 25 to 40 minutes by cab. Delhi is 4 to 5 hours by expressway or about 4 hours by train.
