Things to do in Itanagar
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Itanagar
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best window of the year, washed green hills, clear views and comfortable days after the monsoon.
Cool and dry, excellent for walking and for the February festival cluster, with cold early mornings.
Warming and largely dry before the pre monsoon showers, good travelling months that grow greener.
Monsoon, very heavy rain, landslide risk on hill roads and leeches at the lake. Late September is redeemed by the Ziro Festival if roads cooperate.

Where to stay in Itanagar
Ganga Market / C-Sector
first night, eating and markets
The practical centre, walkable to restaurants, markets and the bus and cab stands.
Vivek Vihar / Chandranagar
quietest good rooms
Residential and calm, home to the top rated hotel and the Theravada temple, a short drive from the centre.
Gompa Road / museum hill
scenery and calm
The greenest pocket in the city, by the Gompa and the state museum.
Naharlagun
early trains and transit logistics
The twin town by the railway station, useful for logistics but a 13 km commute to the capital sights.
Think twice about
- Low riverbank ground near the Dikrong and city streams
In monsoon the hazard is water and landslides, not people. Avoid low riverbank bases from June to September.
- Isolated NH-415 highway strip outside the twin towns
Nothing walkable at night, patchy lighting and every meal needs a vehicle. Stay in Itanagar or Naharlagun proper.
- Naharlagun as a sightseeing base
Not unsafe, just impractical for an Itanagar sightseeing trip, as you will spend the trip commuting 13 km each way.

- Pakhui Tiger Reserve: weeks ahead
- Cygnett Inn Trendz: a few days ahead

Is Itanagar safe?
- Monsoon landslides can close the Ziro and other hill roads without warning from June to September, so build slack into every leg.
- Watch for leeches and biting caterpillars around Ganga Lake in the wet months, and never wade in the Dikrong in the rains.
- Emergency number in India is 112, and mobile coverage is fine in the twin towns but patchy on the roads out.
Itanagar travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Ita Fort without a local guide is the most common disappointment, twenty minutes of grassy brick with no interpretation.
- Generic lists paste Namdapha and Tawang into Itanagar as if they were city sights, but both are days away and separate trips.
- Ganga Lake boating stops by about 5pm, and the zoo and sanctuary are green and pleasant, not safari experiences.
Getting around Itanagar: public transport and more
- Hire one driver for the full day circuit of fort, museum, gompa and lake, as sights are spread across a hilly linear city on NH-415.
- Donyi Polo Airport at Holongi is about 13 to 15 km away and Naharlagun railway station is about 13 km away.
- Shared Sumos are the budget intercity system, with early departures for Ziro at roughly INR 550 a seat in traveller reports.
- Agree every taxi fare before you move, and carry cash for small kitchens, markets and shared taxis.
