Things to do in Goa
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Goa
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months overall: dry, calm seas, everything open, January after the 5th avoids peak crowds.
Peak dry season begins, full calendar open. Late December is 2 to 3 times prices with gridlock.
Shoulder value windows: greenest Goa and Dudhsagar flow in Oct to Nov, hot but dry in March.
Hot and humid summer, domestic holiday rush, mango season, many expat run places close by May.
Monsoon: shacks dismantled, swimming closed, markets and jeeps stop. Green, slow and cheap for repeat visitors.

Worth the trip for
Best things to do in Goa
Fontainhas
Latin Quarter lanes of Portuguese houses, tiles and churches, best walked early before crowds and harsh light.
Basilica of Bom Jesus
Goa's top cultural sight, a 1605 church holding the relics of St Francis Xavier.
Sé Cathedral
One of Asia's largest churches, facing Bom Jesus in the former capital of Old Goa.
Palolem Beach
Palm-fringed swimmable crescent with kayaks, good shacks and boat trips to quieter coves.
Chapora Fort
Short climb to a laterite fort with 360 degree views over Vagator, Morjim and the river mouth.
Sahakari Spice Farm
Guided spice walk through pepper, cardamom and cashew, with a traditional Goan buffet lunch.
Divar Island

Saturday Night Market
Seasonal night market with hundreds of stalls, global food courts, live music and bars.
Where to stay in Goa
Assagao
food-led trips, couples and groups
Inland restaurant quarter in Portuguese houses, quiet at night, 10 minutes from beaches by scooter or car.
Anjuna and Vagator
nightlife plus beach balance
Cliffs, sunset bars and the flea market, livelier and scruffier than Assagao with quiet pockets at Ozran.
Arambol, Mandrem, Ashwem and Morjim
quiet north, yoga and surf
Far north arc of turtle beaches and cafe culture, couples sweet spot at Morjim and Ashwem.
Candolim and Sinquerim
first timers and families
Calm end of the northern strip with Fort Aguada, good hotels and walkable restaurants, far less chaos than Baga.
Panaji
culture, food and non-beach nights
Capital with Fontainhas heritage hotels, top Goan restaurants and the Mandovi riverfront, not a holiday beach.
Benaulim and Varca
resort families in the south
Wide white beaches south of Margao, big resorts and village restaurants, airport within about 45 minutes.
Think twice about
- Baga to Calangute main strip and Tito's Lane
Tourist funnel of clubs, touting, drug and massage offers, drunk crowds, gridlocked traffic and rip-off pricing. Visit for a night, sleep in Candolim instead.
- Mapusa and Margao town centres as a beach base
Working towns with great markets and food but no beach, congested cores and business hotels. Sleep here only for an early train from Margao.
- Mandovi jetty and casino strip in Panaji
Tout heavy and charmless as a party base. Stay in Fontainhas two streets inland and walk to the river.
- Beach huts in monsoon
Most Palolem and Agonda huts are seasonal and dismantled before the rains. A cheap monsoon hut listing is likely closed, leaking or mislabelled.

Is Goa safe?
- Sea is the real risk: swim between lifeguard flags, never drunk or after dark, and treat monsoon sea as closed.
- Scooter safety: helmet for rider and pillion, licence carried, no drink riding, slow down on unlit night roads.
- Women travellers: base in Assagao, Candolim or Palolem over Baga, use hotel taxis after dark and share live location. Emergency 112.
- Check your government's current travel advice before you go.
Goa travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Tito's Lane in Baga is not the real Goa: commercial clubs, touts and cover charges.
- Watersports combo packages from beach touts shrink to very short rides. Buy single rides and agree time first.
- Commission stops at carpet, jewellery and spice shops, scratch card prizes and timeshare pitches. A polite no works.
- Drug offers on the Baga and Anjuna strip: police stings, severe Indian narcotics law and poisoning risk. Walk away every time.
Getting around Goa: public transport and more
- No regular Uber or Ola; GoaMiles works unevenly. Rent a scooter or self-drive car, or pre-book hotel taxis for fixed legs.
- Use airport prepaid counters at Dabolim and Mopa. Agree taxi fares before riding and never accept a meter promise.
- Match airport to base: Dabolim is central, Mopa is far north and 2.5 hours from Palolem. Cluster days north, Panaji and south.
