- Gangtok is low crime and MG Marg is well lit, but altitude, weather and mountain roads are the real hazards.
- Do not drink alcohol before the high altitude day. Hydrate, walk slowly and descend on a worsening headache.
- Carry cash. ATMs can be unreliable and small operators and some restaurants are cash first.
Gangtok travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The rushed ten point taxi circuit gives about twenty minutes per sight. Hire the car for a day and pick fewer stops.
- Anyone selling the ropeway inside a premium tour is padding a very cheap ride.
- Yak rides and jacket rental at Tsomgo are negotiable. Agree the full price before you start.
Getting around Gangtok: public transport and more
- Bagdogra airport and New Jalpaiguri station are both about four to five hours away by the NH-10 hill road.
- Walk the compact centre. For the rest use point to point taxis and agree the fare before getting in.
- Only authorised tourist vehicles can go to Tsomgo and Nathula. Self driving that axis is not permitted.
