Things to do in Darjeeling
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Darjeeling
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best window: post monsoon clear skies, excellent Kangchenjunga visibility, crisp air and autumnal tea, but busiest and priciest.
Spring: rhododendron and magnolia bloom, first flush plucked March to April, clear mornings with cloud building by afternoon.
Cold, quiet and on clear days superb, with thin crowds and lower prices except Christmas to New Year. Proper heating is essential.
Monsoon: heavy rain, fog, landslide cut roads and poor mountain visibility. Advised against for a first visit.
What's on
- Dasain / Durga Puja Late September or October, with the main Tika day on the tenth day
Major Nepali Hindu festival with tika and marigolds, filling hotels and transport in the clearest season.
- Tihar / Diwali 7-11 November 2026, Laxmi Puja 8 November
Festival of lamps with deusi bhailo singing across town, in the post monsoon clear season.
- First flush tea season and rhododendron bloom late March-April
Prized first flush is plucked and rhododendrons peak on the Singalila and Senchal trails.
- Darjeeling Summer Festival usually May / June, dates vary
Flower shows, cultural performances and a carnival parade. Pleasant to coincide with, not a reason to travel alone.
- Sonam Lhosar January / February
Tamang New Year marked at monasteries in the quiet winter season.
- Losar usually February, lunar calendar
Tibetan New Year marked at Ghum and Dali monasteries in a quiet town.
- Melo-Tea Festival 22-24 December in its first edition, check current year dates

Where to stay in Darjeeling
Upper Mall / Chowrasta ridge
first trip, all-round base
Walk to Chowrasta, Glenary's and Keventer's in minutes, above the worst traffic, with a chance of a mountain facing room.
Jalapahar / St Paul's and Lebong slopes
quiet, views and couples
Wooded and residential, calmer than the centre, with the Peace Pagoda and Happy Valley sides, but taxis needed at night.
Tea estate or village homestay outside town
a different, slower trip entirely
Greener and slower with meals included and walks from the door, best split with town nights rather than used as a town base.
Think twice about
- Chowk Bazaar / lower Laden La Road and the jeep stand area
Congested commercial throat with idling jeeps, fumes, horns, no views and the hardest uphill walk home in town.
- Hill Cart Road near Darjeeling station
Rooms get all day road traffic, horns and diesel that share the toy train line, not ridge quiet.
- Ghum
Pleasant and quiet but 8 km from every restaurant in town, which stops being charming as a first timer base by night two.
- Far down the valley without its own transport
Some Darjeeling listings are 30 to 60 minutes away on winding roads. Check the map pin, not the listing title, before paying.

Is Darjeeling safe?
- Take care on steep, wet and sometimes poorly lit lanes at night, and watch belongings in the bazaar crowd.
- Do not walk forest trails around Senchal or Singalila alone or after dark.
- Town altitude is mild for most, but Sandakphu is a real altitude factor. Ascend in stages and descend if symptoms worsen.
- Monsoon landslides are the main natural risk. Check road status daily June to September and build in buffer days.
- Check local news before travel for bandhs, and dress modestly and ask before photographing at monasteries and temples.
Darjeeling travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Packaged 7 or 10 point taxi days race every sight in 20 minutes each. Split sunrise, Ghum, zoo and Pagoda across mornings.
- Pashupati Market on the Mirik route sells imported synthetics as Nepal bargains. Look, buy almost nothing.
- Unsealed first flush tea at implausible prices from touts. Buy sealed GI logo packets from estates or Nathmull's and Golden Tips.
- Rock Garden is mis-sold as unmissable. It is a pretty picnic garden at the end of a long steep taxi ride.
- Tiger Hill in monsoon cloud, at any price, and pony or photo touts at Chowrasta where prices were not agreed fully in advance.
- Darjeeling plus Gangtok is not a casual day trip. It is 4 to 5 hours each way, with Sikkim permit rules for foreign nationals.
Getting around Darjeeling: public transport and more
- Fly to Bagdogra or train to New Jalpaiguri, then 3 to 4 hours up by pre-booked car or shared jeep, aiming to reach the plains before noon.
- Darjeeling town is walked, not driven. Shared jeeps and taxis cover Ghum, the zoo, Happy Valley and Tiger Hill.
- Agree every taxi or jeep fare before you get in, every time.
- Carry cash for small restaurants, jeeps and monasteries. ATMs run dry on peak weekends and foreign cards are unreliable.
- Download offline maps and tickets, as signal is intermittent on Singalila and in estate valleys.
