Things to do in Bhubaneswar
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Bhubaneswar
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best weather, dry and cool, with Chilika birds and comfortable safaris. Peak prices.
Heat builds fast. Sightseeing compresses to dawn and late afternoon.
Worst heat, often 40 to 42 C with humidity. Come only for a specific reason, with a heat plan.
Monsoon. Heavy rain, waterlogged lanes, rough Chilika and slippery cave rock. Cheapest hotels.
Rains retreat and Durga Puja fills the city, with a real coastal cyclone risk to keep day trips flexible.

Best things to do in Bhubaneswar
Lingaraj Temple
The city's defining 11th century Shiva temple, best at dawn, with non Hindus using the outside viewing platform.
Bindu Sagar
The sacred tank at the heart of the Old Town temple cluster, calmest and most atmospheric in the early morning.
Parsurameswar Temple
Among the earliest surviving temples in Odisha, small and densely carved, and the right start to the temple chronology.
Mukteswara Temple
A small temple prized for its carved gateway and fine sculpture, often called the gem of Odia architecture.
Ananta Vasudeva Temple
The Old Town Vishnu temple on Bindu Sagar whose kitchen lunch is an authentic Odia meal in itself.
Rajarani Temple
A garden set temple in reddish gold stone that works like an open air gallery of carved figures.
Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves
Ancient Jain retreat caves from the 2nd century BCE, with the key Kharavela inscription and a city view.
Dhauli Shanti Stupa
A white peace pagoda above the Daya plain near the Ashokan edicts, and the best sunset outing in the city.
Where to stay in Bhubaneswar
Jaydev Vihar / Nayapalli
first trip, all-round base
The leafy hotel district, roughly equidistant from the Old Town, Nandankanan and the airport, with the best dining.
Ashok Nagar / Master Canteen / Janpath
short stays, trains, eating out on foot
The commercial spine by the station, with walkable restaurants and cafes at mid range and cheap prices.
Old Town
temple focused and slow travel
On foot at Lingaraj and Bindu Sagar at dawn, in small guesthouses on narrow lanes with early closing dining.
Patia / Chandrasekharpur
university, IT, medical and longer stays
A modern northern corridor near KIIT and Infocity, but a long drive from the Old Town sights.
Dumduma / Patrapada
airport, Khandagiri and conference trips with a car
Luxury hotels on the highway side of the city, strong on quality and weak on walkable neighbourhood life.
Think twice about
- Bhubaneswar railway station and Cuttack Road strip
Touting, traffic chaos, noise and the city's worst value bottom tier hotels. Walk to Janpath proper for the same money spent better.
- Remote NH-16 highway properties
Nothing walkable and every sight, meal and museum becomes a cab trip. A listing sold by a highway kilometre is not a base.
- Patia for a short sightseeing trip
Not unsafe, just 45 minutes or more each way from the Old Town in traffic, which costs you the dawn temple hours.
- Old Town lanes in monsoon for mobility needs
Low lying lanes waterlog in heavy rain, surfaces are uneven and car access is limited even in dry weather.

- Chandaka Dampara Wildlife Sanctuary: a few days ahead
- Konark Sun Temple: a few days ahead

Is Bhubaneswar safe?
- Violent crime is low and the main areas feel secure in the evening, but watch petty theft at the station and in festival crowds.
- Road traffic is the real risk. Do not ride NH-16 and take care crossing Janpath and Cuttack Road.
- Swim on Odisha beaches only where lifeguards and flags permit, as the undertow is strong.
Bhubaneswar travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Priest and guide pressure for paid rituals at Lingaraj and Puri. A firm, polite refusal works.
- Coach tours that give Konark Sun Temple only a short photo stop instead of 90 minutes with a guide.
- Unlicensed Chilika boats at Satapada with vague circuits. Use authorised boats and agree price and route first.
Getting around Bhubaneswar: public transport and more
- Use Ola and Uber app cabs as the default, autos for short Old Town hops with the fare agreed first.
- Mo Bus is cheap and connects the main sights, but use it only when you have time to spare.
- Walk the Old Town and planned avenues at dawn, and plan midday indoors in every month.
