Things to do in Wakayama
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Wakayama
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Blossom peak: early cherry blossom at Kimiidera from late March, then about 600 trees at Wakayama Castle into early April.
Waka Matsuri at Kishu Toshogu, and the start of the Shirahama swimming season in some listings.
Rainy season, then heat and humidity with typhoon risk; weight trips to mornings, the sea and cool Koyasan.
The connoisseur window: warm sea into September, best Koyasan and Kumano walking in October and November, maples in late November.
Quietest and cheapest months, sharp bay views and plum blossom toward February, but cold on Koyasan and thin Tomogashima sailings.
What's on
- Waka Matsuri Sunday closest to 17 May

Kimiidera blooms early and is said to announce spring to Kansai; the castle park follows with about 600 trees.
- Momijidani Garden maple colour late November

What to book ahead
- Koyasan: weeks ahead
- Kumano Kodo Nakahechi: weeks ahead
- Kishumae Sushi Yoshishin: weeks ahead
- Ekoin Temple: months ahead
- Reserve the six seat sushi counter as soon as dates are fixed, before hotels.
- Book Koyasan shukubo weeks to months ahead, about four months for Ekoin in peak periods.
- Book Kumano Kodo village lodging first and fit the walking around the rooms you can get.
- Check the Tomogashima ferry and the weather the day before; winter sailings thin to weekends.
Is Wakayama safe?
- The practical risks are natural: summer heat, typhoon season from June to October, winter cold on Koyasan and ferry cancellations at Tomogashima.
- Take care on steep wet stone steps at Kimiidera, Kishu Toshogu and Wakaura Tenmangu.
- Emergency numbers are 110 for police and 119 for ambulance and fire, and visitors must carry a passport at all times.
Wakayama travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Treating Koyasan as a Wakayama city day trip, when it is hours each way from here and far easier from Osaka.
- Treating the Kumano Kodo as a side trip; it starts in Tanabe and takes four or more walking days.
- Going to Marina City for Porto Europa alone; it is a free stroll to pair with the tuna market.
- Expecting an original castle keep; the Wakayama keep is a 1958 reconstruction, good as a museum and viewpoint.
Getting around Wakayama: public transport and more
- JR Wakayama Station and Nankai Wakayamashi Station are different stations across the centre; the JR side has the ramen, the Kishigawa Line and the limited express, the Nankai side is nearer the castle and the Kada Line.
- City buses do the real work: about 10 minutes to the castle, 25 minutes to the Wakaura shrines and 40 minutes to Marina City from JR Wakayama Station.
- Kansai International Airport is about 40 minutes away and Osaka Namba about 1 hour by Nankai limited express.
- Koyasan from Wakayama city by rail via Hashimoto takes roughly 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours each way; from Osaka Namba it is about 1 hour 25 minutes to Gokurakubashi, then 5 minutes by cable car and a bus into town.
