Kobe travel guide
Where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Things to do in Kobe, planned over three days
Best time to visit Kobe
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring, joint best overall. Cherry blossom late March to early April, roses May to June, and a Golden Week crowd spike.
Summer, the hardest season. Rain in June to mid July, then heat and humidity, with Rokko, Maya and Suma Beach as the strategy.
Autumn, joint best overall and the local favourite. October is the sweet spot and November brings Rokko and Arima maples.
Winter, with the clearest views, peak sake season and Luminarie in late January to early February. February suits connoisseurs despite the cold.

Worth the trip for
Best things to do in Kobe
Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens & Ropeway

Weathercock House

Uroko House
Preserved mansion with a fish scale facade, porcelain inside and a harbour view over Kitano.
Sawanotsuru Museum
Free sake museum starting the classic Nada brewery walk, in the district that makes much of Japan's sake.

Where to stay in Kobe
Sannomiya
first trip, all-round base
Kobe's actual centre where all rail lines converge, with Kitano uphill, the waterfront downhill and beef nearby.
Motomachi / Nankinmachi
food lovers
Flatter and quieter than Sannomiya, close to Chinatown, Daimaru, the Former Foreign Settlement and the waterfront.
Harborland / Meriken Park waterfront
views and occasions
Luxury waterfront strip where every room is about the harbour view and night lights, a short walk to Sannomiya.
Kitano / Shin-Kobe
quiet and character
Leafy hillside with boutique hotels, the ropeway and falls on the doorstep and the Shinkansen at Shin-Kobe.
Arima Onsen
one-night add-on, not a Kobe base
Stay one night for the full soak, dine and soak rhythm, then return to Sannomiya rather than commuting daily.
Think twice about
- Around JR Kobe Station
Not the centre despite the name. It sits west of Sannomiya with fewer restaurants and a quieter industrial feel after dark.
- Shin-Nagata / Nagata Ward as a base
Too far west of every sight with almost no visitor hotels. Visit for lunch, do not base there.
- Immediate Sannomiya nightlife blocks for light sleepers
Bar, hostess and pachinko blocks east and south of Ikuta Shrine are safe but noisy with late night touting.
- Port Island / Rokko Island as a base
Clean and modern but dull at night, with Portliner dependence for every dinner.

Is Kobe safe?
- Kobe is very safe for visitors, including solo women at night in Sannomiya and Motomachi. Emergency is 110 for police and 119 for fire or ambulance.
- Know your hotel evacuation information. Trains stop after a tremor and elevators should not be used after one.
- Wash before onsen bathing, keep towels and swimsuits out of the water, and put hair up.
- Carry cash in small notes and coins for Chinatown stalls, shrine fortunes, small sobameshi shops and brewery tasting counters.
Kobe travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Street stalls and generic spots using the Kobe beef name loosely are not serving certified Kobe beef.
- Lunch sets are 30 to 50 percent cheaper than dinner for the same beef grades.
- Harborland mall is a mall. The waterfront walk is the attraction, not the shopping.
- Do not confuse atoa on the central waterfront with Kobe Suma Sea World in the west.
Getting around Kobe: public transport and more
- Sannomiya is downtown, Shin-Kobe is the Shinkansen stop north, and Kobe Station is west and not downtown.
- Walk the flat centre east to west and use the City Loop bus for the Kitano and ropeway slope.
- Use an ICOCA or other major IC card on rail, subway, Portliner and buses.
- Osaka is 20 to 25 minutes by JR Special Rapid, Kyoto about 50 minutes, and Kobe Airport 18 minutes by Portliner.
