Crab season ends on 20 March, skiing winds down, and the fossil dig season opens in mid March.
Blossom month at Maruoka Castle, Asuwayama Park and the Asuwa River, with the easiest weather of the year.
Green season opens with the Echizen Pottery Festival in Echizen Pottery Village.
Rainy season: Heisenji moss at its best after rain, hydrangeas on Mount Asuwa, hot and humid days.
Peak family season: the Dinosaur Museum and its dig sell out, and the Mikuni coast is at its kindest.
Quieter months with autumn colour building toward Eiheiji and Ichijodani, and no legal Echizen crab yet.
Crab seasons open on 6 November as autumn colour peaks at Eiheiji and Ichijodani.

Think twice about
- Tsuruga as a base for northern Fukui
At the wrong end of the prefecture for Eiheiji, Katsuyama, Tojinbo and Awara, taxing every day trip by an hour or more each way.
- Isolated rural rentals in winter
Snow-country buses thin out and taxis are scarce, so a cheap house you cannot reliably leave in a snowstorm is not cheap.

Is Fukui safe?
- Tojinbo is unfenced with uneven wet rock, so keep back from edges, keep children in hand, and leave in bad weather.
- Fukui is heavy snow country, so use winter tyres, expect transport suspension in major falls, and keep a buffer day.
- Winter Sea of Japan waves cancel the sightseeing boats and wash over lower rocks, so never climb down for a closer look.
- At Eiheiji keep left, stay on the wooden corridors, and never photograph the trainee monks.
Fukui travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Turning up at the Dinosaur Museum without a timed ticket in holiday season is the most common ruined Fukui day.
- Echizen crab outside 6 November to 20 March is a different crab, whatever the menu implies.
- You cannot see the Tojinbo cliffs themselves from Tojinbo Tower, so walk the trail and take the boat instead.
- Maruoka Castle's 1576 oldest keep date is tradition, not settled fact, as recent studies date it later.
Getting around Fukui: public transport and more
- Tokyo to Fukui is a direct Hokuriku Shinkansen ride of about 2 hours 51 minutes at fastest since March 2024.
- From Osaka, Kyoto and Nagoya you now change at Tsuruga, where direct limited expresses no longer run through.
- The Echizen Railway runs to Katsuyama in about 1 hour and to Mikuniminato for Tojinbo in about 50 minutes.
- Direct buses from Fukui Station to Eiheiji take about 30 minutes.
