Fukuoka travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Nakasu riverside yatai row is the most tourist priced, favour Tenjin, Nagahama and side street stalls and confirm prices before ordering.
- Never follow a bar tout in Nakasu into an upstairs bar, the final bill far above the pitch is the city one rip off pattern.
- Canal City and Fukuoka Tower are fine stops, not half day destinations on their own.
- Do not eat only at Ichiran or Ippudo, and do not buy mentaiko at airport souvenir markup over Yanagibashi or station shops.
Getting around Fukuoka: public transport and more
- Airport subway is 5 minutes to Hakata and 11 minutes to Tenjin, taxi about 1200 to 1600 yen.
- Load a digital IC card such as Suica, Pasmo, Icoca or Hayakaken and tap on subway, JR, Nishitetsu and buses.
- Hakata Station to Canal City to Nakasu to Tenjin is one flat pleasant 2km walk.
- Nishitetsu from Tenjin serves Dazaifu and Yanagawa, JR from Hakata serves Nanzoin, Mojiko and Beppu.
- Drive only for Itoshima and golf, with a 1949 Geneva International Driving Permit, and Japan drives on the left.
