Best time to visit Akita
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Blossom in Senshu in mid to late April and Kakunodate weeping cherries in late April, then fresh green in May.
Rainy season makes Taiheizan trails wet, while lake and onsen stay lush, uncrowded and cheaper.
Kanto Matsuri on 3 to 6 August is the peak reason to come, in peak heat, with festival prices and sell outs.
Autumn colour and the most walkable cold, with Nyuto at its most beautiful in foliage season.
Hatahata season, shottsuru pots and New Year closures at small restaurants around 29 December to 3 January.
Snow festival season: Yokote Kamakura, Namahage Sedo in Oga, peak Nyuto snow and peak transport disruption risk.

Is Akita safe?
- The material risks are winter ice, summer festival heat and coastal wind at Nyudozaki, not crime.
- On forested trails around Taiheizan and Nyuto, stay on marked trails and heed bear warnings in autumn.
- At Tsurunoyu, use the separate baths if mixed bathing is not for you, and wash before entering any onsen.
Akita travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Godzilla Rock on Oga is a two minute photo, not a sight, so do not let a tour pad the day with it.
- Port Tower Selion is a pleasant 40 minutes en route, not a half day headline.
- Two Kakunodate house interiors teach the lesson, so skip the fourth house and keep daylight for Lake Tazawa.
Getting around Akita: public transport and more
- Ride the Akita Shinkansen Komachi about 3 hours 50 minutes direct from Tokyo to Akita Station and book reserved seats.
- Walk the centre: station to Senshu Park is 10 to 15 minutes and to Kawabata about 15 minutes.
- Pick one excursion direction per day: Kakunodate, Lake Tazawa and Nyuto chain east, Oga chains west.
- Carry cash for rural buses toward Oga, Tazawa and Nyuto, where IC card acceptance varies.
