Best time to visit Gifu
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Ukai season runs nightly from 11 May to 15 October, with ayu on menus and long museum hours.
Rainy season and building heat bring high water ukai cancellations; late June to mid July is the weakest window.
Cherry blossom at Gifu Park and the castle hill in late March and early April, before the ukai season starts.
Quiet off season: empty museums, appealing onsen, low prices, and snow country excursions at their hardest access.

- Summer heat on the Mt. Kinka trails and high water on the Nagara, which cancels ukai, are the practical risks.
- Emergency numbers are 110 for police and 119 for ambulance and fire, and you must carry your passport.

- Old guides send you inside a castle keep that is closed until November 2027.
- Takayama and Shirakawa-go are separate bases 118 km plus away, not Gifu city sights.
- Kawaramachi shops close early, so go in the afternoon, not after dinner.
- The free bank view of ukai is distant; the boat is the experience worth paying for.
Getting around Gifu: public transport and more
- JR trains run about 20 minutes from Nagoya to Gifu, and buses run about 15 minutes from JR Gifu Station to Gifu Park and Kawaramachi.
- Within the river cluster everything walks: park, ropeway, Great Buddha, Kawaramachi, museum and ukai dock form one compact circuit.
- For Takayama take the JR Limited Express Hida from Gifu, about 1 hour 55 minutes. For Gujo Hachiman take the highway bus from Meitetsu Gifu.
