Things to do in Wahiba Sands
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Wahiba Sands
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months. Comfortable days, cold clear nights, all camps open. Peak price and occupancy.
Good shoulder. Hot midday at the edges, workable at dawn and sunset. Prices soften outside the core.
Extreme heat above 40 C. Many camps close or reduce service. Dawn and dusk activity only, if at all.
What's on
- Oman National Day 18 November
Flags and celebration with peak domestic travel. Book camps and transport early.
- Eid al Fitr Around 10 March in 2027, shifting earlier each year
Bidiyah and Wadi Bani Khalid get busier and hours change on the days themselves. Confirm locally.

Where to stay in Wahiba Sands
Al Wasil entry corridor
first trip, one night, easy Wadi Bani Khalid exit
Established camps 10 to 25 km in from tarmac, with real dunes, camp transfers and a painless exit.
Bidiyah and Al Mintirib town edge
budget, late arrival, 2WD drivers
Fuel, tyre shops and town food at the sand edge, with short transfers and less depth and silence.
Deep sands
two nights, honeymoon, private groups
True quiet and dark 30 km and more in, paid for in price, transfer time and dependence on the camp.
Think twice about
- Low sand edge immediately off tarmac for wild camping
Quad routes, camp traffic and town light spoil the desert in peak season. Use a camp or go properly deep with a guide.
- Muscat as a Wahiba base
About 3 hours each way turns the desert into a rushed sunset hour. Sleep in a camp to get sunrise, stars and silence.
- Inner dunes for solo self driving
Soft sand, no reliable signal and no passing traffic. Travel in convoy or with a camp driver and leave your plans.

- Never enter Wadi Bani Khalid if rain is forecast upstream, and leave the water if it rises or discolours. Emergency number 9999.
Wahiba Sands travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Muscat day trip as your only Wahiba visit, quad pricing per person per half hour, and luxury prices for a town edge camp.
- Arriving after dark without a transfer plan. Sand tracks and tyre deflation are a daylight system.
Getting around Wahiba Sands: public transport and more
- 4WD only off tarmac. Park a 2WD at the Bidiyah or Al Wasil meeting point and take the camp transfer.
- Deflate tyres at the sand edge in Bidiyah or Al Wasil and reinflate at the petrol station on exit.
- Download offline maps before Muscat. Coverage is decent near camps and villages and weak to absent deep in the dunes.
