Things to do in Muscat
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Muscat
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Winter peak: 24 to 28C days, swimmable sea, wadis, desert, opera and golf all working at once.
Spring shoulder: warming to 29 to 35C, inviting wadi water, softer prices and the Jebel Akhdar rose harvest.
Summer: 35 to 42C humid heat, outdoor sightseeing collapses to dawn and after dark, opera out of season.
Late October offers value with almost everything still working.

- Grand Mosque visits are 8 to 11am Saturday to Thursday only, with no booking. Friday cannot include the mosque interior.
- Book desert camps and private 4WD days days ahead in November to February, and Al Mouj tee times ahead on winter weekends.

Is Muscat safe?
- Personal safety is excellent, with rare violent crime and uncommon pickpocketing. Stay alert in souq crowds. Emergency number 9999.
- The real risks are heat, water and roads: heat illness, wadi flash floods, strong currents and long distance driving fatigue.
- Never enter a wadi if rain is forecast in its catchment, and leave at once if water rises or discolours.
- Alcohol is only in licensed hotel venues, expensive, with no public drinking and zero tolerance drink driving.
- Cover shoulders and knees in public. Swimwear is for resort beaches and pools, and a cover over swimwear is the wadi norm.
- Check your government's current travel advice before you go.
Muscat travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Muttrah Souq first prices and imported souvenir stock sold as Omani. Buy frankincense by grade and smell, in small quantities.
- The hotel grounds taxi premium is the most repeated money complaint. App taxis cannot collect from those lobbies.
- Private tours for everything cost two to three times group tours for solo travellers to Wadi Shab or Nizwa.
- Al Bustan and Barr Al Jissah day visits are resort days at resort prices, not seeing Muscat.
- Doing both the National Museum and Bait Al Zubair on a short trip overlaps. Pick one and do it properly.
- Midday outdoor plans from May to September are unsafe, not brave.
Getting around Muscat: public transport and more
- A car is the city: Muscat is a 50km coastal strip with no metro and sparse buses. Rent or budget for taxis.
- Use Otaxi, the main local ride app, or Mwasalat official taxis. Walk to the hotel gate to use app taxis and avoid the hotel grounds premium.
- Cluster by end of the city: airport to Qurum 25 to 30 minutes, Qurum to Muttrah 20 to 25, Al Mouj to Muttrah 45 to 60.
- Walk only within a district, and outside winter only before about 9am and after about 5pm.
