And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Nizwa
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip

Shoulder caution, city heat builds to 35 to 42C, sightseeing early and late, plateau stays pleasant.
Worst for the city at over 43C, fine for the plateau as a summer escape for Gulf residents.

Is Nizwa safe?
- Oman is very safe with low street crime, and the real risks are heat, mountain roads and flash floods.
- Never enter a wadi when rain is forecast upstream, and take care on unguardrailed canyon edges.
- Carry water even for the fort, and bring layers for cold nights and strong sun at altitude on the plateaus.
- Emergency number is 9999, and Nizwa Hospital is a major regional referral hospital.
Nizwa travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Day tripping from Muscat for only 90 minutes in the souq, instead of overnighting in Nizwa.
- Doing Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams in one day, with about five hours of driving and neither walked properly.
- Paying khanjar prices without comparing silversmiths, or buying antique khanjars with export restrictions.
- Arriving at the goat market at 9.30am after it is over, or visiting the fort at midday from May to September.
- Expecting a restaurant scene like Muscat or Dubai, rather than planning around Tamrah and one plateau splurge.
Getting around Nizwa: public transport and more
- Rent a car from Muscat Airport for the 160 km drive, as roads are excellent and signage is bilingual.
- Jebel Akhdar is 4x4 only at the checkpoint, and Jebel Shams upper track strongly favours 4x4.
- Old Town is walkable, everything else is a short drive, and hotels calling a known taxi is most reliable.
- Download offline maps, as signal drops in the mountains and canyons.
