Things to do in Tokushima
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Tokushima
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring: Bizan cherry trees late March to early April, fresh green in Iya, Henro peak season and large spring whirlpool tides.
Rainy season into fierce heat: rafting builds to its peak, with some Iya driving and rafting disruption in heavy rain.
Awa Odori on Aug 12-15 makes this the best week of the year on purpose, and the worst time to visit otherwise.
Best season: sudachi harvest, strong autumn whirlpool tides, and Iya, Oboke and Tsurugi foliage late October to mid November.
Quiet and cheap: Tsurugi chairlift closed, some Iya road ice, and Kazurabashi closes for vine replacement in a Jan to Feb window.
What's on

Where to stay in Tokushima
Tokushima Station / Shinmachi
first trip, festival, and car-free trips
Walk to the station, Awa Odori Kaikan, Bizan Ropeway, boardwalk bars and ramen, and walk home after festival nights.
Naruto
whirlpools, Otsuka Museum, golf and resort stays
Base by Naruto Park and the coast for whirlpools and the museum at sunrise, with an easy day trip into Tokushima City.
Iya / Oboke
valley immersion and unrushed Iya
Overnighting gives dawn mist, onsen and Kazurabashi before day trippers; book a dinner included plan as nowhere else is walkable.
Think twice about
- Immediate port and industrial waterfront (Akaishi / Komatsushima port zones)
Not dangerous, just industrial, amenity free and unwalkable to sights, with no visitor hotels of note.
- Highway-strip motels along Routes 11/55 outside Naruto and Tokushima
Car dependent with no evening food within walking distance, so taxi fares erase the saving.
- Deep Iya without a car
Beautiful but isolating: miss the shuttle and you are genuinely stranded until morning.

Is Tokushima safe?
- August heat and humidity cause heatstroke at the festival: hydrate, seek shade and take salt.
- Never swim near the Naruto whirlpools: strait currents are too strong.
- River and mountain weather changes fast after rain: obey rafting operator and road closures.
- Emergency numbers are 110 for police and 119 for ambulance and fire.
Tokushima travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Going to Naruto at the wrong tide is the top disappointment: check the tide chart and go near peak current.
- Tokushima Castle has no keep: it is a pleasant park, not a castle visit.
- Do not try Iya, Naruto and Otsuka in one day tour from Osaka: pick two zones per day maximum.
- Central Tokushima is quiet by 22:00 outside festival week: plan dinner early.
- Free Awa Odori viewing fills by 17:00 on peak nights: pay for seats or claim space early.
Getting around Tokushima: public transport and more
- Highway bus from Osaka or Kobe across Awaji Island takes about 2.5 hours and is usually fastest door to door.
- You need a car for Iya: rent from Tokushima Station or the airport and drive Routes 32, 438 and 439 slowly.
- Without a car, base by Tokushima Station, do Naruto by JR Kotoku Line plus local bus, and see Iya on a booked tour.
- Walk the city centre: station, Kaikan, Bizan, Shinmachi and Castle Park are all within 15 minutes.
- Carry cash for rural buses, temple stamps, bridge fees and ramen ticket machines; ICOCA works on JR and most buses.
- Forward luggage hotel to hotel by takkyubin instead of dragging cases on Henro walks or Iya buses.
