Things to do in Takamatsu
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Takamatsu
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best, tied with autumn. Cherry blossom late March to early April, new green in May. Golden Week in late April to early May is crowded.
Hot and risky. Rainy season June to early July, then 33 to 36C heat, jellyfish in August and typhoon ferry risk.
Best, tied with spring. Maple colour, clear skies, 15 to 24C and oyster season begins. Book weekends early.
Quiet, mild and underrated. Daytime 8 to 13C, clearest Seto views, no queues and cheapest hotels, but short daylight.

Where to stay in Takamatsu
Takamatsu Station / Sunport / Kitahama
first trip, island days, all-round base
Stations, ferry port, Tamamo Park and Kitahama Alley within a 10 minute walk, so early ferries and tired returns are easy.
Kawaramachi / Marugamemachi Shotengai
food, nightlife and shopping
The arcade district puts dozens of udon shops, izakaya and bars on your doorstep, 15 minutes on foot from the port.
Ritsurin / Bancho
quiet, local, longer and repeat stays
Residential area by Ritsurin Garden with good neighbourhood udon shops, where you can enter the garden at opening.
Yashima / Mure
one-night special stay with a car
Ryokan and small hotels near Yashima and Shikoku Mura suit a slow night, but commuting eats the advantage as a base.
Think twice about
- Takamatsu Airport area (Konan)
About 40 minutes south with almost no hotels or evening food, so it makes a poor base.
- Kotohira, Marugame and Sakaide as a base
Basing there to save yen makes nightly returns and early ferry mornings harder. A deliberate Kotohira ryokan night is the exception.
- Sunport construction zone
Safe and signed during the 2025 to 2026 arena works, but allow extra minutes getting through.
- Late-night bar pockets off Kawaramachi and Kajiyamachi
Normal, lively nightlife streets that are simply noisy for light sleepers.

What to book ahead
- Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum: weeks ahead
- Nakanishi Chinshoen: a few days ahead
- Sanuki Mengyo: a few days ahead
- Mitani Seito: a few days ahead
- Chichu Art Museum: weeks ahead
- Seto Inland Sea Guided Kayak and SUP: a few days ahead
- Private Seto Charter Cruise: a few days ahead
- Takamatsu Country Club: a few days ahead
- Chichu Art Museum needs a timed online reservation. The Noguchi Garden Museum needs an online reservation and has tiny capacity.
- Benesse House books months ahead in peak season. In Triennale years, book Takamatsu rooms the moment dates are announced.
- Reserve olive beef at Ichigo and the omakase at DOI days ahead, especially at weekends.
- Naoshima and Teshima museums mostly close on Monday. Plan island days Tuesday to Sunday and check each museum.
- Famous udon shops take no reservations, often close by 14:00 to 15:00 when noodles sell out, so arrive before noon with a second choice.
Is Takamatsu safe?
- Takamatsu is very safe, with rare violent crime and uncommon pickpocketing. Tap water is drinkable and medical care is excellent.
- Summer heat is the real risk on the Konpira steps and exposed walks. Carry a litre of water per person and start early.
- Swim only at patrolled beaches in season and do not paddle self-guided: Seto currents are fast and ferry lanes are busy.
- Typhoons roughly July to October can cancel ferries. Shikoku sits near the Nankai Trough, so know your hotel evacuation point.
Takamatsu travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Symbol Tower observation is a fine free add-on at the port but thin as a planned sight. Do the lighthouse walk instead.
- Takamatsu Castle is a sea moat and park, not a rebuilt keep. Do not rank it above Ritsurin.
- Do not do Naoshima and Teshima in one day. Each needs a full day.
- Do not leave Kagawa having only eaten station or airport udon. The best bowls are a 10 minute walk away for half the price.
- Shodoshima without checking tides or booking transport: Angel Road does not exist at high tide and buses are infrequent.
Getting around Takamatsu: public transport and more
- Walk the centre. Use Kotoden, not JR, for city moves: Kawaramachi is its hub for Ritsurin, Yashima, Busshozan and Kotohira.
- Change at Okayama for the Marine Liner across the Seto Ohashi Bridge, about 55 minutes to Takamatsu. The airport bus takes about 40 minutes.
- Ferries are the timetable. Photograph the return timetable at the port on arrival and build a flex day for wind or typhoon cancellations.
- Driving only really pays on Shodoshima and for Goshikidai or Kotohira with a group. Japan drives on the left and tolls apply.
