Things to do in Shizuoka
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Shizuoka
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Fuji season: the clearest mornings of the year, snow on the peak, quiet sights, hatsumode crowds at New Year.
Blossom in Sunpu Castle Park, Shizuoka Matsuri in early April, spring sakura ebi and the shincha first tea harvest.
Rainy season: Fuji largely disappears, tea fields are greenest, the city is quiet and cheap.
Heat and festivals, with the worst Fuji visibility of the year at roughly one morning in four or fewer.
Typhoon risk fades, autumn sakura ebi return, Hagoromo Festival in October and Daidogei in early November.

- Emergency numbers are 110 for police and 119 for ambulance and fire.
Shizuoka travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Do not build a day that only works if Fuji appears: it hides on most summer mornings.
- Sunpu Castle has no keep: visit it as a park and garden, not a castle pilgrimage.
- Do not bolt Izu onto a city day without checking connections: Shuzenji is about two hours each way.
Getting around Shizuoka: public transport and more
- JR Shizuoka Station is the hub: Tokaido Line east to Shimizu, Shizutetsu buses to Nihondaira, Toro, Mariko and Sengen.
- Buses to Nihondaira, Miho and Mariko run roughly hourly, so photograph the return timetable on arrival.
- The centre, Sunpu Castle Park, Sengen and Aoba, walks comfortably.
