- The real local risks are natural: earthquakes and tsunami, heavy rain, flooding and landslides in rainy and typhoon season - follow Japan Meteorological Agency warnings.
- Never swim in the Kanmon Straits, a busy shipping lane with a fast tidal current; swim at Tsunoshima's designated beach in season.
- Emergency numbers in Japan are 110 for police and 119 for fire and ambulance.

- Arriving at Shin-Shimonoseki and assuming you are at the waterfront.
- Going to Karato on a weekday afternoon expecting the weekend Bakangai; go in the morning before the 15:00 close.
- Attempting Tsunoshima by bus without checking the handful of daily services and the last bus back.
- Eating fugu anywhere that is not a licensed restaurant or market processor.

- Shimonoseki Station on the Sanyo Main Line serves the waterfront; Shin-Shimonoseki is the inland Shinkansen stop, so take a bus or local connection into the centre.
- Sanden buses link the station with Karato, Mimosusogawa for the tunnel and ropeway, and Chofu.
- The Kanmon Ferry links Karato Pier and Mojiko in about 5 minutes on the water, and the pedestrian tunnel is free on foot.
- Rent a car only for Tsunoshima and Kawatana; the waterfront cluster needs no car.
