Things to do in Saint-Malo
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Saint-Malo
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Winter is quiet and dramatic with storm watching, thalasso and low prices, but many boats close and days are short.
Spring is the best value sweet spot, with equinox tides, GR34 walking and reopening boats and restaurants.
Summer has the warmest sea and everything open, but August crowds crush Intra-Muros at midday and prices peak.
September is arguably best, warm sea and no crowds, and autumn stays fine before Route du Rhum in November.
Best months overall are late May to June and September.

Ramparts, cathedral and restaurants on foot, but small expensive rooms, summer noise and parking outside the walls.

beach-house, longer car-based stays
Quieter residential beaches and villas further east, but you will bus, cycle or drive in for dinners.
Dinard
resort week as an alternative base
Belle Epoque calm across the Rance with Saint-Malo as a ferry day trip, not a base for popping back after dinner.
Think twice about
- Gare and Avenue Anita Conti station fringe
Not unsafe, just charmless and a 20 to 25 minute walk from the walls with little of interest on the way.
- Out-of-town commercial zones south toward La Madeleine and Champs Noirs
Safe chain hotels and parking lots for motorists, but you will drive and park for everything you came for.

Is Saint-Malo safe?
- The main risk is the tide: obey tide tables, flags and lifeguard zones on Grand Bé, Petit Bé and Fort National.
- Do not cross barriers to watch grandes marées waves on the Sillon seafront, and move cars from seafront parking.
- Wet rampart stone, harbour cobbles and algae on causeways are slippery, so wear real shoes.
Saint-Malo travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Place Chateaubriand and Porte Saint-Vincent terraces charge gate prices for the least interesting cooking in the walls.
- The Grand Aquarium at midday in August without a prebooked ticket means queues, crowding and a short simulator ride.
- Tour Solidor's museum interior has been closed in recent years, so go for the Alet walk and the view only.
Getting around Saint-Malo: public transport and more
- Direct TGV from Paris Montparnasse takes about 2h15, then a 20 to 25 minute walk or MAT bus from the station.
- Intra-Muros, Sillon and Saint-Servan form a walkable triangle with no leg over about 25 minutes.
- Park outside the walls at Esplanade Saint-Vincent or the harbour car parks and forget the car in town.
