Things to do in Riyadh
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Riyadh
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Peak and best. Daytime 20 to 28C, cold desert evenings, Riyadh Season, Noor Riyadh and outdoor everything.
Good but fading, highs climbing from about 27C, Season winding down and spring sandstorms possible.
Shoulder and hot at about 33C highs. Limit outdoors to mornings and evenings, with better hotel value.
Worst for a leisure trip, highs 39 to 44C. Museums, malls, evening itineraries and floodlit night golf still work.
Shoulder turning good, cooling fast and Riyadh Season launches late October, the value play before peak prices.

Best things to do in Riyadh
At-Turaif District

Edge of the World

National Museum of Saudi Arabia
Eight galleries from prehistory to unification that make Diriyah and Masmak make sense afterwards.
Al Masmak Palace Museum

Where to stay in Riyadh
Al Olaya / As Sulimaniyah
first trip, all-round base
Kingdom Centre and Al Faisaliah on the doorstep, Tahlia Street dining next door and Metro Blue Line access.
KAFD / Al Aqiq / Hittin
food, Season events and a newer feel
New north of towers, Laysen Valley dining and Roshn Front, with quick airport access and more distance to Diriyah.
Diplomatic Quarter (Al Safarat) & Al Hada
calm, Wadi Hanifah, longer stays
Garden enclave of embassies and tree lined streets on the Wadi Hanifah trails, ten minutes from Diriyah.
Diriyah / Bujairi edge
a 1-2 night heritage add-on, not a whole trip
Sleeping by At-Turaif gives dawn and late evening access without the cross town ride, but maroons a wider trip.
Think twice about
- Al Batha / Ad Dirah immediate market blocks
Visit for Masmak and Souq Al Zal by day, but basing here means ageing budget hotels, heavy congestion and few leisure addresses nearby.
- Industrial and far-south districts
Around the Second Industrial City and Al Shifa industrial edges there is no visitor infrastructure and long rides to everything.
- Far-north new suburbs beyond the airport road
Deep An Narjis and Hittin outskirts are fine residential areas but a short trip is spent in a car, erasing any saving.
- Anywhere chosen solely for a motorway junction
Ring road hotels strand pedestrians completely with no walking fallback, and a listing that names no real district is the tell.

Is Riyadh safe?

- Dress modestly in public with loose clothing covering shoulders and knees. Swimwear belongs at hotel pools only.
- No public displays of affection, and same-sex relationships are illegal in Saudi Arabia.
- Ask before photographing people and never photograph government, military or police sites.
- Do not criticise the Saudi state, royal family or Islam in public or online while in the country.
- Smaller businesses pause at prayer times and many sights pause Friday midday. Ramadan reshapes the whole day.
- Use your right hand for greetings, giving and receiving, and accept offered coffee and dates.
- Heat is a safety issue from May to September. Carry water and cap outdoor activity to early and late.
Riyadh travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Boulevard World on a weekend night in peak Season, where crowd density can eat the evening in queues.
- The Sky Bridge on a dusty or hazy day, when you pay for a view that is not there. Check the sky first.
- Generic mall dining when Takya, Mama Noura and Tahlia Street exist, with the KAFD and VIA exceptions.
- Antique premiums at Souq Al Zal. Do not pay investment prices for carpets or metalwork without an independent appraisal.
- Unlicensed desert drivers offering Edge of the World trips by social media DM. The saving is small, the failure mode large.
- Expecting a Dubai style night out. There is no alcohol anywhere, including hotels.
- One day itineraries stacking Diriyah, Edge of the World and old town. The geography means a day spent in a car.
Getting around Riyadh: public transport and more
- Metro first, ride-hail second, rental car last. The Blue Line covers the Olaya to KAFD to National Museum spine.
- A 2 hour Metro pass is SAR 4 and a 3 day pass at SAR 20 is the tourist sweet spot. Buy the Darb card or app.
- Uber, Careem, Bolt and Jeeny all operate. Install two and compare surge, and budget rides as a line item.
- Peak traffic runs roughly 07:00 to 09:00 and 16:00 to 20:00, worst Thursday evening and on Season event nights.
- Do not plan to walk between sights outside the Diplomatic Quarter, Wadi Hanifah, Diriyah, KAFD skywalks and the souqs.
- King Khalid International Airport is 35 km north, 30 to 50 minutes to Olaya or KAFD, and the Metro now connects it.
