Things to do in AlUla
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit AlUla
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Ideal winter season: mild days around 20 to 25 C, properly cold nights, and the flagship festival period in December and January.
The sweet spot: Arts Festival and citrus season, the best pure weather, with Tantora crowds and prices thinning out.
Start and end of the October to April season. Warm but workable with dawn and dusk discipline.
Hot shoulders, survivable only early and late in the day, with low crowds and soft hotel rates. Azimuth usually falls in September.
Worst months: daytime temperatures regularly exceed 43 to 45 C and heritage touring collapses. Come only for a discounted resort pool stay.

Where to stay in AlUla
Ashar Valley
splurge and honeymoon stays
Jaw dropping canyon walls, resort pools and total quiet, but nothing to walk to and a drive for every sight and dinner.
Old Town and AlJadidah
first trip, all-round base
The only walkable evening in AlUla, with Market Street, cafes, the oasis trailhead and candlelit lanes.
Hegra and the northern road
heritage-first trips
Sleep inside the Hegra landscape with first access to the tombs, at the cost of a 25 minute drive to Old Town dining.
Modern AlUla town, Al Aziziyah and Hail Road
value and long stays
The working town Saudis use, with supermarkets, bakeries and lower prices, 10 to 15 minutes from Old Town by car.
Think twice about
- Far highway strip and unreviewed desert camps
Not danger but stranding: no walkable food, no cruising taxis, 30 plus minutes from Winter Park, and basic camps with shared bathrooms and no heating on freezing nights.
- Main road facing rooms on King Fahd Road and Hail Road
Safe but noisy truck corridors. A front facing room means a poor night's sleep and a worse first impression, so ask for a back facing room.

Is AlUla safe?
- AlUla is very safe for visitors, including solo women, and crime against tourists is rare. Real risks are heat, dehydration, night driving on unlit roads with camels, and rare flash floods.
- Alcohol is strictly prohibited throughout Saudi Arabia, including in hotels, with no tourist exception. Do not bring any. Drug penalties are severe.
- Dress modestly in public, covering shoulders and knees. Women tourists do not need an abaya or head covering in AlUla, but a light scarf is useful.
- Ask before photographing people, avoid public displays of affection, and carry some cash for small town shops and tips. Cards and contactless are widely accepted.
AlUla travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The Dadan half of the Dadan and Ikmah tour is the weakest paid heritage product. Go for Ikmah and the Lion Tombs, and do not buy it twice.
- Paying Ashar Valley resort rates for a dawn to dusk sightseeing trip, or peak festival rates for mid-range rooms like Shaden.
- Driving to Maraya without a tour, concert or restaurant booking. You may see only a checkpoint.
- Midday sightseeing from May to September, when sites sit in full sun above 42 C. Summer hotel deals are priced that way for a reason.
- Expecting a nightlife or bar scene. There is none, by law. Evenings are dinners, stargazing, concerts and the Old Town cafe promenade.
- Drone photography is heavily restricted around heritage sites. Leave the drone at home unless a permit is sorted in advance.
Getting around AlUla: public transport and more
- Fly into AlUla International Airport, 30 to 45 minutes from Old Town and Ashar. The drive from Riyadh is roughly 10 to 11 hours.
- You need wheels: there is no useful public transport. Rent a car at the airport, booked ahead, and head straight to the rental desks on landing.
- Heritage tours run on scheduled buses from Winter Park once you have a ticket. Hotels, Elephant Rock, Maraya, Harrat and the airport are all separate drives.
- If you do not rent, pre-book a private driver for the whole stay through your hotel. Ride-hailing is patchy and late night app pickups from remote sites often fail.
