Things to do in Otaru
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Otaru
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Winter is the atmospheric season, snow on the stone warehouses, Tenguyama skiing, and pavements of ice and packed snow.
Spring shoulder season, quieter and cheaper, with the herring sights reopening in April and blossom around early May.
Summer brings the busiest crowds, cruise-ship days, Shakotan at its best and sea urchin season from June to August.
Autumn is calmer, with the Yoichi grape harvest, October colour, and the herring sights closing at the end of November.
What's on
- Otaru Snow Light Path Festival Early to mid February, 17:00 to 21:00; check dates
Snow candles and ice lanterns line the canal, the Former Temiya Line and some 30 sites across the city, all volunteer made.
- Otaru Ushio Matsuri Last weekend of July
Otaru's largest summer festival at Pier No. 3, street dancing, a mikoshi parade and fireworks over the harbour on the final night.

Sakaimachi Street
A preserved merchant street of stone buildings holding glass shops, sweet shops and cafes, best in daylight.

Where to stay in Otaru
Canal and Ironai
first trip, couples and festival nights
Canal-view hotels with the Art Base, the Bank of Japan Museum and Sushiya-dori all a short walk away.
Otaru Station area
transport, value and one-night stays
Trains to Sapporo and Yoichi at the door, the Sankaku Market beside the station, and the canal 10 minutes downhill.
Sakaimachi and Minami-Otaru end
quiet and shopping, second visits
The Music Box Museum and glass shops at the door and crowds gone by evening, but far from the station and most dinners.
Asarigawa Onsen
onsen and skiing only
A hot spring valley 20 to 30 minutes out with resort hotels and a small ski area, chosen for soaking not sightseeing.
Shukutsu and the aquarium coast
quiet sea views with a car
Hotels near the aquarium and herring sights with bay views and parking, isolated after dark without a car.
Think twice about
- Chikko and Wing Bay area as a car-free base
A mall and hotel cluster 2 to 3 kilometres from the canal, so every sight and dinner means a train or taxi and none of Otaru's atmosphere.
- Isolated coastal or hillside rentals in winter
Without a car, snow, ice, early darkness and thin taxi supply can leave you unable to reliably reach the centre.

- At Cape Kamui obey path closures in high wind, and check Tenguyama ropeway wind status before travelling out.
- Emergency numbers are 110 for police and 119 for fire and ambulance.

- Reversing the day by doing the canal at midday and Sakaimachi after its shops shut around 17:00 to 18:00.
- Building a day only around Sakaimachi shopping and missing the Art Base, the herring sights and Tenguyama.
- Promising the Nishin Goten on a winter trip when it is closed from December to March.
- Driving after any whisky or sake tasting, which is illegal at any level in Japan.
Getting around Otaru: public transport and more
- JR rapid trains run Sapporo to Otaru in about 30 to 40 minutes, and the centre is walkable once you arrive.
- Station to canal is about 10 minutes on foot, canal to the far end of Sakaimachi about 15 to 20 minutes.
- Yoichi is about 25 minutes by local train from Otaru, while Shakotan needs a car, taxi or tour bus.
- Local buses serve Tenguyama ropeway and Shukutsu, and winter pavements need boots with real grip.
