Things to do in Okayama
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Okayama
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best overall: autumn colour, grapes, the Bizen Pottery Festival, dry sunny weather and the cloud sea season.
Cherry blossom, Kurashiki willows leafing out, sawara season and mild cycling weather.
Green and calm before the rainy season, with the easiest sightseeing weather of spring.
Plum then early cherry blossom at Korakuen, cooler and quieter than April.
Grapes and the start of the cloud sea season, but still hot with typhoon risk.
Worth it for the Saidaiji Naked Festival and peak oysters. Otherwise cold and quiet.
White peach season, Momotaro Matsuri and the lit Summer Fantasy Garden, at the cost of fierce heat.
Quiet and cheap with peak oysters and winter illuminations, but bare willows in Kurashiki.
What's on
- Saidaiji Eyo Hadaka Matsuri 3rd Saturday in February
The Naked Festival at Saidaiji Kannon-in, where thousands of men surge at midnight for two sacred sticks.
- Okayama Momotaro Matsuri late July to early August
Parades, Uraja demon dancers, food stalls and fireworks in the city centre summer programme.
- Korakuen Summer Fantasy Garden August evenings
The garden and castle lit at night in summer, magical and crowded.
- Bizen Pottery Festival 3rd Saturday and Sunday in October
The pottery year's peak in Imbe, with the best selection, kiln openings and the worst crowds.
- Noh at Korakuen early October and 3 November
Noh performances in the garden, a quiet highlight of the autumn programme.
- Korakuen Autumn Fantasy Garden mid to late November
Night illuminations in the garden at the peak of the autumn colour.
Best things to do in Okayama
Okayama Korakuen Garden
One of Japan's Three Great Gardens, with broad lawns, ponds and the black castle as borrowed scenery.
Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter
A preserved Edo merchant quarter of white storehouses and a willow-lined canal, best before the crowds.
Ohara Museum of Art
Japan's first Western art museum, a compact hang with El Greco, Monet and Rodin on the canal.

The black Crow Castle across from Korakuen, a renovated reconstruction with interactive exhibits and a river panorama.
Kibitsu Shrine
National Treasure shrine tied to the Momotaro legend, with a 360 metre covered corridor climbing the hill.
Kibitsuhiko Shrine

Where to stay in Okayama
Okayama Station East and the Momotaro Odori to Korakuen corridor
first trip, all-round base
Shinkansen, trams, the densest restaurants and a pleasant walk to the castle and garden all converge here.
Kurashiki Bikan and Kurashiki Station
romantics, second-night splitters
Staying by the canal gives you Bikan at dawn and after dark, when day trippers have gone.
Uno, Naoshima and the northern onsen towns
special-purpose overnights
Destination overnights rather than bases: Benesse House on Naoshima, or Yubara and Yunogo onsen in the north.
Think twice about
- Okayama Airport area and Sanyo Expressway interchange hotels
Isolated and car dependent, with no evening life. Fine with a car, a poor base without one.
- Far south Tamano or far east Saidaiji as a sole base
Fine neighbourhoods but a poor hub for the sights. Day trip to them instead of sleeping there.
- Love-hotel clusters on the station fringe
Clearly labelled on booking maps and simply not the product most visitors want. Not a safety issue.

Is Okayama safe?
- Okayama is among the safest visitor cities in Japan, and solo walking in the centre and Kurashiki is normal.
- Summer heat is the main health risk. Start early, carry water and use shade where you can.
- Watch bicycles on the shared Nishigawa promenade, and do not leave the Kibiji cycle return too late as rural paths are unlit.
- Smaller onsen may refuse tattoos. Hotel baths such as Dormy Inn are more forgiving for guests, but check first.
Okayama travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Okayama Castle is a reconstruction. Treat it as a renovated museum and viewpoint, not a rival to Himeji.
- Kurashiki canal street is at its worst from 11am to 3pm on weekends. Go early or stay to dusk.
- Many Naoshima museums close on Mondays and Inujima closes on Tuesdays. Do not schedule an island day then.
- Great white peaches run only from early July to mid August. Outside that, shops sell peach products, not the fruit.
- Kakioko peaks from November to March. Summer versions use frozen oysters or are not offered at the best shops.
Getting around Okayama: public transport and more
- Walk plus the Okaden tram covers the centre. The Higashiyama line runs from the station to Shiroshita for the castle and Korakuen.
- Kurashiki is 15 to 17 minutes by train, Uno Port about 50 to 60, Imbe about 40 and Bitchu-Takahashi about 60.
- Momochari bike share is excellent for Nishigawa, castle and Omotecho hops in good weather.
- Rent a car only for Hiruzen and the north, Bitchu Matsuyama at your own pace, or golf.
