Where to stay in Nagoya
Sakae / Nishiki
first trip, all-round base
Downtown base with Hisaya Odori Park, the tower, museums and the best concentration of restaurants and bars.
Meieki
transport and day trips
Blocks around Nagoya Station and JR Gate Tower, unbeatable for day trips, late arrivals and business schedules.
Fushimi
quiet mid-point
One stop between Meieki and Sakae by the river and art museum, calmer at night and often better value.
Kanayama
value and airport line
Southern hub with a direct line to Centrair and cheaper hotels, functional and five minutes by subway to Sakae.
Think twice about
- Nagoya Port / Kinjo-futo
Industrial and windswept with almost no evening dining and a 30 minute ride from most sights. Fine for a Legoland overnight only.
- Far eastern or northern suburbs
You save little on rooms and pay it back in travel time on every trip into the centre.
- Nishiki 3-chome nightlife blocks
Host and hostess clubs and late bars make it loud until late for light sleepers. One block in any direction fixes it.
- Nagoya Station west Taiko-dori side late at night
The grittiest-feeling pocket by the station, with small bars, love hotels and occasional touting. The east side is more polished.

- Carry 10,000 to 20,000 yen cash for small shops, shrines and markets. Tap water is drinkable and there is no tipping.
Nagoya travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Nagoya Castle keep is closed. You are paying for the palace and gardens, which are worth it.
- Legoland is the wrong audience call for adults without kids aged 2 to 12.
- Oasis 21 is a 20 minute photo stop, not a half day. Pair it with the tower and park.
- Do not spend a first afternoon in the station underground malls. Eat, transit and get above ground.
- Spacing matters with red miso. Miso katsu, nikomi and doteni in one day defeats most stomachs.
Getting around Nagoya: public transport and more
- Airport is Chubu Centrair, 35 to 50 minutes south. The Mu-SKY train to Nagoya Station takes about 28 minutes.
- Meieki and Sakae are three minutes apart on the Higashiyama line. A one-day ticket pays off in three to four rides.
- IC cards including manaca, Suica, Pasmo and ICOCA work across the city. Taxis are plentiful and cheaper than Tokyo.
