Things to do in Nagasaki
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Nagasaki
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Mild, quiet winter except the Lantern Festival in February. January is cheapest with the clearest Inasa nights.
Cherry blossom late March to early April, azaleas in May, and the most comfortable hiking weather, outside Golden Week.
Tsuyu rainy season June to mid July, then heat and humidity. Peron Championships in late July.
High heat, Obon on 15 August and building typhoon risk. Keep Gunkanjima and Unzen days swappable.
Kunchi 7 to 9 October, then late October to November is by consensus the best span for a first trip.
What's on
- Nagasaki Lantern Festival 6-23 February
About 15,000 Chinese lanterns across Chinatown, Minato Park, Central Park and the Nakashima River, lit in the evening.
- Nagasaki Hata (kite) season early April into early May
Traditional painted fighting kites with glass coated strings, a folk tradition from the trade era.
- Nagasaki Peron Championships late July
Dragon boat style peron races in the harbour, a Chinese origin tradition over 350 years old.
- Shoro Nagashi (Spirit Boat Procession) 15 August
Families parade hand built spirit boats with firecrackers to the harbour. Respectful viewing only, it is a funeral rite.
- Nagasaki Kunchi 7-9 October

Best things to do in Nagasaki
Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum
The essential museum visit, paired with Hypocenter Park and Peace Park in one slow, unhurried morning.
Mount Inasa
The famous night view over the harbour, best from 30 to 40 minutes before sunset on a clear evening.
Glover Garden
Meiji era merchants houses above the harbour, best walked downhill from Gate 2 to Oura Cathedral.
Dejima
The reconstructed Dutch trading post that was Japan's only official window to Europe for 200 years.
Shinchi Chinatown
Japan's oldest Chinatown, best judged as an eating and evening base rather than a midday photo stop.
Meganebashi Bridge
Japan's oldest stone arch bridge, the start of the best free riverside and temple district walk in the centre.
Twenty-Six Martyrs Museum and Monument
A moving memorial and museum to the 26 Christians crucified here in 1597 and to Hidden Christian history.
Nagasaki Penguin Aquarium
A small specialist aquarium with eight penguin species and beach walks that work brilliantly for young children.
Where to stay in Nagasaki
Nagasaki Station / Dejima corridor
first trip, all-round base
Flat, step free access to the tram, station and a harbour walk south to Dejima and Chinatown.
Shinchi Chinatown / Hamamachi / Shianbashi
food-first and evening trips
The city's living centre, with the densest restaurants, covered arcades and tram links in both directions.
Minami-Yamate / Glover Street / Oura
character, couples and a splurge
Stone lanes and harbour view rooms, with Glover Garden and Oura Cathedral as your morning walk, but hills on return.
Urakami (Peace Park area)
deliberate, quiet, museum-focused stay
Residential and calm close to the Atomic Bomb Museum, with fewer restaurants and no real evening scene.
Think twice about
- Shianbashi bar-alley core as a sleeping address
Not danger, but late night bar noise and small bars with opaque pricing. Eat and drink there by choosing venues yourself.
- Nagasaki Airport area (Omura)
About 40 minutes from the city. A geography trap as a base for Nagasaki City sightseeing.
- Huis Ten Bosch / Sasebo as a Nagasaki City base
Each taxes the other city's trip with a 1 to 1.5 hour transfer. Base in the city you are sightseeing.
- Steep-slope listings above Glover Garden or on Mt. Tateyama
Some require 10 plus minutes of stairs from the tram. With luggage, heat or mobility limits that ruins a stay.

- Real risks are typhoons and heavy rain June to October, heatstroke in July and August, and falls on wet stone slopes.
- Emergency: 110 police, 119 fire and ambulance. Respect quiet and photography rules at memorial and shrine sites.
Nagasaki travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Doing Nagasaki as a Fukuoka day trip and claiming you saw it. Stay overnight, ideally two nights.
- Chinatown as a photo stop only, and the Shikairo queue at 12:30pm. Go at 11am or after 2pm.
- Unlabelled price upstairs bars in Shianbashi and Maruyama. No posted prices plus a friendly invitation means do not enter.
Getting around Nagasaki: public transport and more
- The tram is the city: 4 colour coded lines, flat fare, 1 day pass pays off at 4 to 5 rides, board at the rear and pay at the front.
- Arrive by Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen to Nagasaki Station, or airport bus from Nagasaki Airport in about 40 to 50 minutes.
- Cars are for Unzen, Shimabara and Obama excursions, not the city, where parking is scarce and streets are steep.
