Things to do in Nagano
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Nagano
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Winter peak from late December to mid March: best snow, monkeys bathing and Togakushi snowshoeing.
Spring: snow wall tallest April to May, Kamikochi opens mid to late April, blossom runs late, and late May to June is the underrated all rounder.
Summer Alps peak for Kamikochi, Hakuba hiking and festivals, while Nagano City and Matsumoto are hot and humid.
Autumn is the locals favourite for colour, new soba, apples and chestnuts, though Kamikochi closes 15 November.
Mid November to mid December is the in-between worst window, grey and cold with ski not yet reliable until late December.

Everything works and nothing charms: pure logistics, with the MIDORI soba and souvenir floor.
Hakuba: Happo / Echoland / Wadano
ski trips and summer Alps luxury

village ski stay
A real walkable village that predates skiing, with lifts, bars and 13 free bathhouses in reach.
Shibu Onsen / Yudanaka

Matsumoto
second base for the castle and Kamikochi
Sleep here for Kamikochi and the castle rather than forcing both as Nagano City day trips.
Think twice about
- Karuizawa or Lotte Arai as a Nagano City base
Both are destinations in themselves and poorly placed for Zenko-ji day trips. Base there for golf, summer cool or Myoko snow, not to see Nagano City.

Is Nagano safe?
- No base area needs warning for street homelessness, drug use or personal safety: the real risks are snow, ice, bears and mountain weather.
- Wear proper footwear or rental crampons December to March on icy plazas, Togakushi paths and the Jigokudani trail.
- Carry a bear bell in Togakushi, Kamikochi, Hakuba and Shiga, and do not hike off trail alone at dawn or dusk.
- Soto-yu water can exceed 45 degrees: add cold water, enter slowly, and never bathe after alcohol.
Nagano travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Snow monkeys in summer: you will likely see monkeys but likely not the famous soak. Go in winter for that.
- Nagano City as a four night base: temple, Togakushi and one day trip fill two to three nights, then move to a mountain or onsen base.
- Do not try Kamikochi, Matsumoto Castle and Nagano in one day from Tokyo: you will spend the day in transit and queues.
- The Spirited Away bathhouse claim for Kanaguya is folklore level: enjoy the building from the lane without needing it to be true.
Getting around Nagano: public transport and more
- Tokyo to Nagano City is 80 to 90 minutes by Hokuriku Shinkansen, with reserved seats wise in ski, snow wall and Golden Week peaks.
- Walk Nagano City: the station to Zenko-ji is 1.8 km, and the city loop bus is about 210 yen a ride.
- Day trip transport is the constraint: Alpico bus for Togakushi, Dentetsu train plus bus for the monkeys, Limited Express Shinano for Matsumoto.
- A car only pays for Iiyama and Myoko ski road trips, rural soba touring or the Kiso Valley, with snow tyres in winter.
