Best time to visit Matsuyama
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Joint best season: cherry blossom late March to early April at the castle, Dogo Park and Ishitegawa Park.
Mild and quieter after Golden Week, with good Shimanami cycling weather.
Worst stretch: rainy season June to early July, slippery Ishizuchi trails and unreliable views.
Hot, humid and festive: beach season and festivals, but start outdoors at dawn and carry water.
Joint best season overall: late October to November brings autumn colour, crisp air and the best cycling and hiking.
Quiet, cheap and onsen perfect, with steam in cold air, few queues and mikan at its peak.

Where to stay in Matsuyama
Dogo Onsen
first trip, leisure base

Okaido / City Centre
food, transport and one night stays
At the castle foot by the arcades, best restaurants and bars, and City Station trams and buses.
JR Matsuyama Station / Matsuyama City Station
early trains and heavy luggage
Practical and functional for connections, but a tram ride from most sights and less charming at night.
Okudogo / Hills and Setouchi Coast
resort escape
Beautiful, secluded and onsen rich, but you will taxi or drive for dinner and sightseeing.
Think twice about
- Nibancho and Sanbancho tout bars
Touts for host, hostess and snack bars approach solo men at night. Ignore politely and never drink in a touted bar, where bills are the trap.
- Matsuyama Minami and port industrial zones as a base
Not unsafe, just inconvenient, car dependent and charmless as a sightseeing base.

Matsuyama travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Mikan products, towels and dango on Haikara-dori cost more than at Takashimaya depachika or a supermarket.
- The Botchan Train is slow theatre, not transport. Ride it once for joy and use regular trams to get anywhere.
- Saka no Ue no Kumo Museum exhibitions are mostly Japanese. Go for the Ando building, not a general museum.
- Midday Honkan queues in peak season: the same building at 7am has no wait. Walk up to the castle at blossom weekends instead of queueing for the ropeway.
Getting around Matsuyama: public transport and more
- Trams cover almost everything: lines 5 and 3 link JR Station, City Station, the castle and Dogo for a flat fare.
- Get the Iyotetsu one day pass if you ride 3 or more times, and carry cash for temples and small eateries.
- Airport limousine bus takes about 30 minutes to City Station and Dogo. The Hiroshima ferry is the scenic way in.
