Is Matsumoto safe?
- No base area needs a warning for street conditions; walking back from dinner at night is normal.
- Bears and fast changing mountain weather in Kamikochi, Norikura and on the Nakasendo: carry a bell and layers.
- Castle stairs are steep, narrow and shared both ways: take them slowly and use handrails.
- Winter ice on pavements and lanes from December to March needs proper footwear.
- Book Alpico transport and local operators direct to avoid reseller markups.
Matsumoto travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Matsumoto as a three hour stopover only: the city rewards a night.
- Daio Wasabi Farm as a headline attraction: it is a free rural walk with a big shop.
- Soba for dinner: the best shops are lunch businesses and often close or sell out.
- Kamikochi, Norikura and the castle in one day is two mountain directions plus a city.
- Utsukushigahara in winter by car: the Venus Line closes.
Getting around Matsumoto: public transport and more
- Walk, then bike, then bus in the city: station to castle is about 15 minutes on foot.
- Tokyo is about 2 hours 40 minutes by JR Azusa from Shinjuku; Nagoya is about 2 hours by JR Shinano.
- Kamikochi is a direct Alpico bus in season or train to Shin-Shimashima plus bus, about 1.5 hours.
- A car helps for Utsukushigahara, Azumino and the Kiso Valley, but is a parking nuisance in the city.
