Peak summer with swimming, daily boats and long evenings, plus peak prices and August crowds.
Second sweet spot with the warmest sea, crowds gone and superb mussels, oysters and cycling.

- Expect lively student crowds around Saint-Nicolas and the port on Thursday and weekend nights.
La Rochelle travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Town beaches are urban swims, not a resort beach holiday. The real beaches are day trips.
- Port front first row restaurants charge for the view. Walk one street back for better cooking.
- You circle Fort Boyard and cannot go inside. Book it as a boat day, not a fort tour.
- Avoid the Aquarium at midday in August and driving to Re in August holiday traffic.
Getting around La Rochelle: public transport and more
- Walk and bike in the flat centre, and do not drive in the old town.
- Use Yelo buses, the Bus de Mer sea bus to Minimes and the Passeur ferry across the port entrance.
- The station is a 10 minute walk from the port, with TGV trains to Paris in about 2h30.
- Park once on the edge of the centre and check tide times before boat and island plans.
