Best time to visit Kitakyushu

Cherry blossom fills Katsuyama Park and the Kokura Castle moats in late March and early April.
Kawachi Fujien wisteria runs late April to early May, colliding with Golden Week crowds and advance ticket demand.
Rainy season runs through June into July, then heat and humidity make sightseeing a morning and evening activity.
Peak festival season, with Kokura Gion Daiko and Tobata Gion Yamagasa in July and Wasshoi and the Kanmon fireworks in August.
Heat lingers then clears into comfortable walking weather, with typhoon risk still present into early autumn.

The airport sits on an artificial island well south of the centre with nothing around it at night, so sleep in Kokura instead.

- The Kanmon Strait is a busy shipping lane with fast currents and is never a swimming place.
Kitakyushu travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Kokura Castle and Mojiko Retro are reconstructions and modern layers as well as original fabric, so set expectations before you go.
- Karato Market sushi stalls follow a weekend pattern on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, so a weekday visit is a quieter market visit.
- Space World closed in 2017, so do not build a day around it, its Higashida site is now museums and redevelopment.
Getting around Kitakyushu: public transport and more
- Use Kokura Station as the hub, with trains of about 15 minutes to Mojiko and to Yahata for Higashida and Sarakura.
- Think in clusters and train hops, the city is spread along the coast and districts are too far apart to walk between.
- The airport bus takes about 40 minutes to Kokura Station, and Hakata is about 15 minutes away by Shinkansen.
- Carry cash for markets, small curry shops and the Kanmon ferry, and use an IC card for trains, the monorail and buses.
