Things to do in Kagoshima
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Kagoshima
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Joint best season. Cherry blossom late March to early April, then May azalea colour and green hiking.
Rainy season early June to mid July, then heat, humidity, Iso Beach season and typhoon risk building.
September still hot and typhoon prone. October clears to best hiking and visibility, autumn colour mid November onward.
Mild, quiet onsen season. City rarely freezes, crowds vanish and Kirishima and Ibusuki baths are at their best.
What's on
- Ohara Matsuri 2-3 November

- Kinko Bay Summer Night Fireworks August

Best things to do in Kagoshima

Where to stay in Kagoshima
Tenmonkan
first trip, all-round base
Widest spread of restaurants and bars on your doorstep, with trams and the ferry port close.
Kagoshima-Chuo Station
transport-first trips and excursion days
JR, Shinkansen and airport bus at the door, with Tenmonkan one tram segment away.
Shiroyama hill
splurge or resort night inside the city
Hilltop onsen and the best hotel view of Sakurajima, with a free shuttle to Tenmonkan and the station.
Waterfront / Sakurajima Ferry area
early Sakurajima starts and drivers
Bay views and parking near the port and aquarium, quieter at night and thinner for food.
Outside the city as a second base
split stays for Ibusuki, Kirishima or Yakushima
Excursions are overnight shaped, so one night in Kirishima or Ibusuki beats punishing day returns.
Think twice about
- Tenmonkan bar-block interiors
Noise and bar touts late at night, not a safety problem. Sleep on the edges or a higher floor and never follow a tout upstairs.
- Far-suburban highway-side hotels toward Taniyama and Kamoike
Safe and cheaper but you must tram or drive for every sight and meal, with none of what you came for nearby.
- Kamoike-Shinmachi (Art Hotel Kagoshima location)
Well south of the centre despite best hotel listings, with sharply negative recent reviews on location and service.
- Sakurajima as a sleeping base
Evenings are near empty, food is sparse, ash fall is heaviest and you are ferry dependent for city dinners.

Is Kagoshima safe?
- Check the ash forecast: sunglasses and a mask help on ash days and white clothes are a mistake.
- Typhoons June to October can cancel Yakushima ferries first, plus trains and flights.
- Summer heat and humidity make midday exertion on Sakurajima and in Kirishima a heatstroke risk.
- Emergency numbers are 110 for police and 119 for fire and ambulance.
Kagoshima travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- A cruise half day cramming Sakurajima, Sengan-en and the aquarium in four hours gives each about 45 minutes.
- Ferry udon and port souvenir food disappoint; eat in the city instead.
- Paying splurge prices for a generic station mall wagyu course when tonkatsu and proper yakiniku houses do better.
- Trying to do Yakushima as a day trip.
Getting around Kagoshima: public transport and more
- Trams run at a flat fare around 170 yen and the City View bus links the main sights.
- Get the CUTE pass if your days include the Sakurajima Ferry: 1 day 1300 yen, 2 days 1900 yen.
- Rent a car only for Kirishima or Chiran by car; in the city it is a parking cost with no benefit.
- Kagoshima Airport is 40 to 55 minutes by bus and Kagoshima-Chuo is about 1 hour 20 from Hakata by Shinkansen.
