Iwakuni travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Iwakuni Station and Shin-Iwakuni are different stations, neither at the bridge, so plan the bus leg first.
- The castle keep is a 1962 reconstruction on a shifted site, not a surviving Edo castle.
- A bridge only two hour stopover is the thinnest version; add the castle, snakes and a Hirasei lunch.
- There is no luxury hotel or luxury dining bench in Iwakuni; spend that budget on Miyajima or Hiroshima.
Getting around Iwakuni: public transport and more
- Local trains run about 49 to 52 minutes from Hiroshima to Iwakuni Station, and about 22 to 25 minutes to Miyajimaguchi for Miyajima.
- Neither Iwakuni Station nor Shin-Iwakuni Station is at the sights; buses take about 15 minutes to the Kintaikyo bus stop.
- Within the bridge cluster everything walks: bridge, park, museums, ropeway base and bridge hotel form one circuit.
- The Dassai brewery and Irori Sanzoku Kuga need a car, taxi or booked tour.
